.... being politically correct, I don't dare comment on that one... but you are right, she does look good and ready for sandblasting.

What do you all think, is there a future for the SSUS or not?

There is nothing I hope more than seeing this sleeping beauty come alive again.... what do you all think, will it ever happen, or are we hoping for something that might never happen?

My apologies for incorrectly remembering the source of the rumor (and I stress, this is NOT anything official from the US-conservancy) was actually a FB-group called "Classical Liners and Vintage Cruise Ships Unlimited":

Sadly i am not surprised to hear such rumours. I have always felt that plans for her future are optimistic, especially given the current financial climate. One must wonder just how long this ship can survive before her hull is so bad that repairs to that alone make her survival even more unrealistic. How many decades of neglect can she really be expected to survive? Sure, a few much smaller vessels have been saved from many decades of neglect, at massive cost it must be said. But the big blue is massive compared to them.

Who is going to throw the tens of millions of $$$ at her that will be needed for her future? And will she ever pay that money back?

Removal of asbestos was done in 1994 according to wikipedia... Bad thing with that is that she is nothing but an empty hull and superstructure with decks, no interiors and fittings. Good news is that's like a white canvas to whoever would like to do something with her, no need to strip her down first, and the expenses associated with that...

Also, I just found this old marketing film promoting the SS United States, and her transatlantic crossings from New York to Le Havre...

    Part 2:

    Part 3:

I just can't put into words how much I'd like to go to America on her... It's a shame she will never sail again... :-( Though it's some conciliation that you can cross the atlantic on the QM2 for a (reasonably) modest sum if you don't really need to have the most expensive epic luxury balcony suite...

This would have been before she was towed to Turkey for Asbestos removal and therefore with the "Guts" still in her.
