Ah, I have heard of the Stena Polaris -quite a remarkable ship. i wanted to get a closer look but the entire wharf was closed.
The trawlers - I really liked the way they sat in the snow - unusual (for me, anyway) and quite photographic.
Initially I thought they were old whalers.

All this is absolutely fantastic, thank you so much for sharing. I love all the blue lights pictures, but the colors and light on 1042/2 and /3 are just magic.
MS Lofoten apparently has been stopped in Båtsfjord since last night and all its further stops until Tromsø tomorrow have been cancelled for "technical problem" according to Hurtigruten website. Anyone has any further news?

Thanks Sarnia, I've enjoyed reliving the whole voyage all over again. 1042/2: the light in Kirkenes was just astonishing, one of the highlights of the trip.

They were, weren't they? I spent quite a while with them, but didn't really get anything I was satisfied with. This one here was my best effort

I'm glad you enjoyed them, particularly because your pictures were among the ones that inspired me to take the trip in the first place. So, thank you, Tommi!

Thanks, Patrick,. I could not access the article online -I guess one has to subscribe to the magazine? I used to buy it locally but no longer available.

I found what I think is the article referred to above in Maritime Matters by Peter Knego: http://maritimematters.com/category/ship-blogs/

Thanks, ombugge. I found that our local newsagency has started stocking Ships Monthly so I will ask them to keep a copy for me. (They usually take 1-2 months to reach here. I also subscribed to Shipping Yesterday and Today, but stopped a couple of years back.

Some not so recent images of old Lady L, hopefully not shared before:

I don't remember why all the flags were up but maybe someone else remembers... the date seems to be April 4th 2014...

I have just looked up future voyages for Lofoten and there are none for 2015 after February. Does anyone know what is happening to her?

According to the interactive sailing plan, Lofoten has her regular schedule all through 2015, with three departures every month. March 13 and 24, April 4, 15 and 26. And so on...
I can't even see a gap for maintenance..

She's at Fiskarstrand at the moment which ties up with that schedule. Gives her an opportunity for some tender loving care whilst her sisters are all over the place due to Hurricane Ole!
                    Cheers,

                    Mark.

According to the above table, Lofoten will this year make 32 roundtrips Bergen - Kirkenes - Bergen. Each round trip is 4200 km/2.268 nm (according to NRK minutt for minutt). That makes a total distance of unbelievable 134.000 kilometres! For 2015 only. And Lofoten entered her service in 1964. Start calculating!!

(The same sailing distance applies to all her younger sisters in the fleet as well).
                      Regards; Sigve.

Thanks, guys. I went to the Hurtigruten site and a few levels down I found that there were no "cruises" booked until Dec 2016.
Someone must have hit the bottle when that was entered........

The circumference of the earth at Equator is 21,600 n.miles.
                        2,268 x 32 = 72,576 n.miles./21,600 n.m. = 3.36 circumnavigations at Equator per year.
                        3.36 x 50 = 168 circumnavigations since new, or 3,628,800 n.miles sailed, so far.

Another curiosity is the number of port calls:
                        34 ports x 2 = 68 port calls per round trip x 32 round trips = 2,176 port calls/year x 50 = 108,800 port calls since new.
No wonder she has a few buckles here and there.

                        More statistics:
68 port call per round trip / 11 days = 6.18181818 port calls/day on average.

PS> Based on the assumption that she has operated 352 days/year for all the 50 years in service.

Quote: No wonder she has a few buckles here and there.
True, ombugge. She is quite entitled to have a whinge here and there about her mechanics - and facing Atlantic hurricanes.
If only we lasted as well....

We sailed with flags, because it was the 50th anniversary-cruise of MS Lofoten. So the pictures must have been taken on March 4th, 2014. It was a very sunny sailing through Trondheimsfjord, I can see myself on the Pictures ;-) Thank you for these memories!
