And so Nordstjernen left to shot after shot from the cannoneers, the cheers of the crowds, the scream of sirens from the fire brigade, and the splash of a water salute…to which was added the hooting back and forth from the ships in this most boisterous of farewells.

      Goodbye Trondheim!

Only then did it begin to rain once again …but mere drops that were no competition for the water from Anne Kathrine who saw us safely past Munkholmen and off on our way along Trondheimsfjord.

In the next instalment, next stop Kristiansund.

The one I’d had no intention of including to post here on CVF….but in the end I just have to, because (along with one of the expression on the face of an onlooker which I’ll show you shortly), this image IS “Nordstjernen’s last call in Trondheim”. Way beyond those other predictable favourite ship views, it is what it felt like to be there on Polarlys early that morning.

Maybe it is much more than that. The longer I look at it the more it seems as if it is an image of a future memory of her…my memory. Blurred by rain – or is it my parting tears? – white rails start to separate us as if she’s already sailing into another dimension…like a ghost ship.
You were so right to include this image. There has been so many emotional pictures and word about Nordstjernen's final voyage on this board (and there will be more, I'm sure), but for me this one is right up there with the picture of Carina waving good-bye in the snow.

Thank you for your wonderful report and photos as always Cecilia.

With apologies, I must share my thoughts on what is being said in #1119.

Hugs dear impatient one!!!!!! It will be today...time depending on when I can best go out to avoid the worst of the snow showers. But the bad news is I'm finding I won't quite reach you know where in this installment!!!!

Of course I shall blame Keelson for distracting me with his wonderful Spring trip on Polarlys....and he even included some photos of NX on there!!!!

                            Trondheimsfjorden…and south…

I always take a photo of Munkholmen. Just seems to be an irresistible thing to do on leaving Trondheim …but my photo doesn’t usually look like this.

Once we’d waved goodbye to the fireboat, all but the most hardy sought shelter from wind and rain indoors. The “most hardy” consisted mostly of members of the German forum. Taking down the Forever Young banner after NX left port must have been challenging in the wind, and displaying it for the TV crew’s photo shoot was even more so.

After that I had almost been considering going indoors myself, but there was another photo to be taken. And with Jan-Olav no doubt sound asleep by now, it started to seem more an important duty than merely “something I usually photograph”. You could even say it was my responsibility to take a photo of the ferry’s farewell to Nordstjernen!

But as I had anticipated, it was Glutra rather than Korsfjord that had just left Flakk as we approached. I was very pleased with my photo, but that made taking one of Korsfjord seem even more daunting.
In these grey conditions, she seemed scarcely more than a speck in the distance. It was fortunate I was alone just then, as I know I was muttering “come on Korsfjord” repeatedly and out loud, willing her to leave Rørvik. Was the speck actually already moving? Even when it became clear that this was indeed so, I remained far from happy, for Nordstjernen seemed to have suddenly speeded up putting distance between ship and ferries.
