    Stokmarknes to Svolvær

Shortly after Nordstjernen’s departure from Stokmarknes, an announcement came over the speakers…and that’s when I heard that the by now famous banner proclaiming “Forever Young” would be taken to the aft deck where all the passengers would have the opportunity to sign it. The intention is that the German forum will subsequently present the banner to Hurtigrutens museum.

What a gesture! As it happened I was already in place to be one of the very first to sign the banner. I somehow homed in on the O of “Forever”. It’s actually quite difficult to write on cloth with a marker pen, and my customary flourish of the letter T of my surname proved difficult! That pause, as I attempted to anchor the cloth with spare fingers, was probably the exact moment when I realised I wasn’t just signing it for myself, but for all my dear CV family…well…I resorted to a semi-printing rather than cursive script…and forgot the dash between “CaptainsVoyage” and “forum” for easy googling…but there it is, for our Captain, and for you all.

All this significance, and the honour that had somehow come my way, was only just sinking in as I watched the subsequent signing and found it such an opportunity for photo portraiture.

ArcticGateway reads the signatures and is about to sign, and Muddi looks on with such a mix of pride and delight… I really love these photos I took of a ceremony which continued on and off for much of the remaining afternoon.

With all this taking place on deck, and the approach to Raftsundet, I still managed to wander indoors to take photos which I hope capture the mood…

Time passed quickly, and even on so sunny and bright a day the light was subtly fading. Yet the still recent memories of a darker November day on Nordnorge were much in my mind as the ship passed familiar landmarks, the present light more camera-friendly!

This is an image I am so happy to have captured from this voyage. You feel you are alone amongst mountains and trolls, but then there is a house, and someone is there waving a flag to say their goodbye to the ship. We were stopped in our tracks, murmured in wonderment, then waved madly….
                Unforgettable.

It’s still too early in the year to enter Trollfjord. But an announcement of our location is made, we slow down and linger, practically everyone is out on deck and marvelling at the mountainscape.

But can you discern a tiny speck in the water in the middle of the photo?

It is our MOB boat and not just a crew member but there is a camera man who has been filming!…now to get them back aboard Nordstjernen!

I think all the onlookers felt that getting the video equipment back high and dry was in a way needing more caution than “simply” snatching men and boat from the sea in an emergency would be! At any rate, a couple of advances were made before the boat was in a position to be safely hoisted aboard.

After all that excitement, it’s suddenly seems quiet on deck. We will soon be in Svolvær, and it has been announced that dinner will be served for all on departure from that port. A strange feeling for me as I will have left the ship…but returning in a couple of days. I take a moody kind of photo, perhaps more of pakarang’s influence in it, a moment in time and the evening light. I am pleased with it. So much of my mood and complicated feelings captured in that image.

That sounds like some hellu'va title.... not strange at all I can never learn, nor remember it....

Quiet in the dining room, already set for dinner.

… and hastily emerging outside as Nordstjernen swings round into the harbour I somehow take a photo. How on earth did I manage that, handheld in the increasing darkness…

I have only to walk a few yards along the quay to the Thon Hotel where I will stay overnight, but I pause to look back at the ship.
