    Re: ::: Nordstjernen :::

    Fantastic photos - as ever - Carina. You really get an impression of scale with these.

    You manage to get photos from places and angles that the rest of us could never hope to!!
    Cheers,

    Mark.

      This is an amazing image: very impressive mountains.

      I have been to Trollfjord many times, even with much larger cruise ships but seeing the old Lady so small with those gigantic mountains takes my breath away!

        Svalbard cruises are now online- including sailing to/from Bergen. Very tempting.

            So you're running the night-shift at CVF?
            Great pictures, as you know, I like those kinds of detail shots.

            Lås = lock.
            I usually just type in the following at google to find words I've forgotten: "lås engelska", works in 9 cases of 10.

              Carina, those are beautiful photos, particularly at #689 Nordstjernen in the Trollfjord and #693.4 and 6
              I was intrigued by the ship's name and wondered if there was a direct translation into English. I was just about to use my normal route to Google's translation when I saw Tommi's short cut. Yes, it worked and gave me Pole Star. Beautiful. What a tragedy if she is to be scrapped.

                Re: ::: Nordstjernen :::

                I think Carina is asking about a more maritime term "ett laas kjetting", not a door lock, or pad lock or whatever.

                There are, as ever, several terms used to subscribe this; a "shot of chain", or "a shackle".
                What is all this??? A "shot of chain" is traditionally 15 fathoms, which equals 90 ft. or 27.5 m. An anchor chain consists of a number of shots, which is connected together by "Kenter Links", also known as "shackles", or "Laas" in Norwegian.

                As seen in Carina's picture from Nordstjernen, there is a Kenter in the chain stopper and the first three links above and below has been painted white. This is to indicate that this is the third "shackle" in the chain, counted from the anchor. The term will thus be: "three shackles on deck".

                Alternatively, the order may be given; "three shackles in the water", in which case the chain would be slacked off until the position of the shackle is just at, or slightly below, the water's surface.

                In other words, in stead of giving an order of chain length to be deployed in terms of meters (or feet), the Captain will use the above terms of "Shots", "Shackles", or "Laas" and "on deck" or "in the water".

                Is that confusing enough??

                  Yes, I'm running the night-shift on here Tommi This was 1 of the 10 cases Goggle didn't help much. But thank you, Tommi and wherrygirl.

                  Ombugge, that was exactly what I was looking for. I wanted to explain the meaning of the colors on the chain, but had to give up when I didn't find the correct words. You took care of this for me Thank you!

                      News that almost made me jump of joy and happiness. According to an article on itromso.no, forces in the coastal municipality, Gratangen, throws a line after Nordstjernen, and is planning to use her as a learning platform in Gratangen, possibly combined with beeing a hotel-ship and/or local touristship.

                      Article translated: http://translate.google.com/translat...icle502294.ece

                      Article in norwegian: http://www.itromso.no/article502294.ece

                      "Mayor Ronny Grindstein confirms that they are working with the idea in Gratangen. - We have established a working group to submit an outline for the use of the "Nordstjernen", where we look at applications and economics, both for procurement and operations."

                      "- It is not meant to have the ship laid up, but to make a living next chapter for her. [...] We will now check the realism and potential in the idea and present it for Hurtigruten in the near future."

                      Pleeease let this happen!! What a great retirement this could be for Nordstjernen. And what a comforting thought to still have her here, in northern Norway.

                      Gratangen was an earlier port of call, and is located a little east of Harstad. This was where the old ship "Dronning Maud" was bombed an sank in 1940, so Gratangen acctually has it's place in Hurtigrutens history

                        WOW.....Carina.

                        THAT was really something. .

                        I just read the artikle. And I really like the idea of the Mayer of Gratangen. And the best of all..... They seems to be quite serious about these plans.

                        BUT......it will NOT surprise me, if there are other companies / interests along our coast who also have been doing some "brainstorming" lately to create plans to give Nordstjernen a worthy "Life after death".

                        Something tells me, that THIS thread will be VEERY interesting to visit the next couple of months.

                        Wonderful "detective-work" finding this artikle, Carina

                              This year I have been such a nice boy. I have followed some old ladies across the streets. I have been babysitting and helped some very young single-mothers changing pampers on their babies. I have washed my dishes every time I got visitors. I have been kind to my neighbour. I have payed my bills ALMOST in time. And I have NOT used any bad language when my parents have been rude to me.
                              I think I have improved in almost everything this year, dear Santa.

                              So dear Santa, if you read this. Please read the post and the advertising about that Nordstjernen-model.

                              In addition to that Canon-camera I mentioned to you last week, I will now also put such a Nordstjernen-model on my list for Christmas-wishes this year. You know better than enyone else how much this ship means to me.

                              From a heart full of love........
