    Re: ::: Nordstjernen :::

Fantastic photos Carina!! She looks really in her element amongst the ice and snow.

I also like the photo of the lads bear-spotting!! The life on and around the ships is what makes them so remarkable.

Thanks for the 'insider view' you're able to share with us.
    Cheers,

    Mark.

If you don`t mind GraemeD, here are some images from my cabin 209 from my latest Nordstjernen.trip earlier this year. This is one of the old, original cabins without shower and toilet. But with the fleets most comfortable beds. Nothing can compete with this old wooden beds.

And here are some more detail-shots from the same cabin

I was so facinated by that shadow-effect. The shadow reminds me of a logo from athlete-competitions..................

As I said in the post above, there was no shower and toilet in this cabin. As you probably know they have rebuilt a lot of cabins, and put shower and toilets into the rebuilt cabins. But they still have some of the old original cabins left. And to me, who use Hurtigruten as a "bus at sea", for short distanses, they are good enough to me.

There are public showers and toilets in the corridor just outside the cabins. So if you are lucky, you can meet other passengers in the corridor just wearing their underwear, in a hurry to the toilet or to the shower in the morning.

Thanks Martin....I prefer my home comforts (ie. a shower/toilet in the room), thanks for the pics though - always interesting to see onboard Nordstjernen.

Apparantly there's a ghost aboard the MS Nordstjernen

At the presentation of Q3 today, CEO Olav Fjell said that Nordstjernen will be sold after finishing up on Spitsbergen in 2012. He also said that for 2013 they would have to charter a ship for Spitsbergen. Why not continue with Nordstjernen? Too old? I just learned that she actually had 14 years on Spitsbergen.

Yes, there IS a ghost onboard But why arent they using Fram on Svalbard anymore? Echonomical reasons?

They might want to operate two ships simultaneously because they believe that they will sell out all cabins on them both?

Fjell said it was more money on Greenland, so they want Fram there, and a smaller ship on Svalbard. For summer 2013 they will try to charter a vessel for svalbard, like they did with Polar Star (now bankrupt)

That sounds interesting, Polar. When Fram started doing Svalbard as well as Greenland in the summer months, she hasn’t returned to the very far north on the longer Greenland voyage to Thule which was so very special an experience for me in 2009 (described in the threads This is the Arctic and Greenlanders).

It was the biggest amount of money I’ve ever spent on one thing in my entire life, apart from house purchase, but it was worth every single penny (….kroner!!!!).

Hurtigruten seemed to have connected with the Chinese market with Frams’s voyages, and I guess that is where the money is these days…

All the cruises I looked at for Svalbard 2012 on Fram were fully booked. I'm not saying that all cruises are booked but definitely the ones I was looking at.

You'll need an A cabin then, on the B-deck.

Back to 2008, and 3 photos from the Trollfjord. This was on a cruise, when Nordstjernen wasnt in the regular route. We were several who left Nordstjernen in a smaler boat earlier and sailed into the Trollfjord to go ashore. Some played trolls while Nordstjernen sailed in, while I was the photographer

These 3 photos really shows the dimention of the fjord, and how tiny Nordstjernen acctually is

Trollfjord (the ship) also came in the fjord a little later. I think I already shared a photo of them together here on the board..
