    Would you love to be called "King of OT"?

    Well, to your questions, I would think most shipping lines would not be interested in taking "extra guests" along for the ride. Maybe for several reasons, insurance purposes, lodging (someone still has to clean your cabin and make your food)...

    Though, as you say, I know there are many shipping lines which lets paying passengers go along on cargo routes. I actually think we have a thread about it somewhere in the General section, if I remember correctly.

      I think it depends on the charter contract with the Australian Company and/or if there is still work in progress on the voyage down to "down under".
      For what we know, the whole public areas of the ship could be in a total mess and then it would be a safety hazard for pax to walk around while the work is going on.

      Maybe the drain pipe from the upper decks down to the aft mooring deck has something to do with planned work as well?

      But this is only guessing from my side

      With regards to pax on cargo ships, this is quite common especially on german container ships. I've seen a website about it once and I remember thinking it was quite expensive comared to "normal" cruise ships

        Ok, thank you for answering!

        I didn't think in any way to ride along as a "demanding" pax, but rather just being there on board, without getting in anyones way, holding my own so to speak...., and only use the keel to transport my own body from point A to point B.

        But of course, I see what you say regarding insurance and that kind of things.
        (I just like the thought of rideing along almost for free without bothering anyone. Could be a nice and cheap way to see the world).

          At time of posting, no webcam pictures (only black) however ....

          Geonames gives nearby placenames as:
          • Hellestø, Orre, Vik (all very small villages)
          And a great circle calculation (Vincenty inverse) shows she's about 177 km from Bergen.

          The data is a bit stale though : ~5h 30min before this post, so she must be a good bit further south by now.

            I just came to think of one more thing though: as you probably also have figured out yourself, if you were the son of the company's president or the son of the Captain (or related in any other way), the chances would dramatically increase that they would let you tag along.

              In his epic "Round the World in 80 Days", English comic actor and travel broadcaster Michael Palin sailed in several merchantmen.

              Though he sometimes found it difficult to find a ship, some owners/operators were happy to take a fee paying passenger (plus cameraman and soundman). As far as I recall, he did the negotiations locally; nothing was pre-arranged.

                "Finnmarken" was at 56°26'/04°33' about 30 minutes ago, when her AIS signal went out of reach..., at least on my AIS
                That should place her about 85 nautical miles (158 km) out on the south-west radial out of Flekkefjord.

                Another thing I read out of the AIS is that her speed just now is 13,6 knots and her heading is 184° (COG 194°) .

                EDIT: Updated position is N 57°27.01' / E 004°32.69'

                      I will continue the guessing by saying that she probably only carry a small crew for the trip, (Minimum Safe Manning) at least from Las Palmas to Oz. (There may be some workers on board for the first leg??)

                      As for the hose(s) hanging on the stern I can think of three reasons;
                      - Fuel hose, either for re-fuelling from shore, or to supply fuel to shore installations (Acting as Fuel Storage)

                      - Fresh water supply hose from shore. (RO Water makers cannot be used in inshore location and evaporators doesn't work without waste heat from the engines)

                      - Sewage discharge hose. (Barrow Island is a Marine and Nature Reserve so there will be strict rules for discharge of black and gray water (maybe even deck run-off) from the construction fleet, especially accommodation vessels)

                      PS> I'm assuming she will be moored with the stern to a pier or wharf while at Barrow.

                      I'm also assuming that she will be going around Cape of Good Hope since she is stopping for re-fuelling at Las Palmas. Does anybody know?

                        Next time I see an old-fashioned nurse with a suitable rounded "stern", I will indeed think of "Finnmarken"

                            Lisbon|Cadiz would leave it uncertain.

                            Gibraltar|Malaga and further into the Med would definately mean Suez.

                            I thought Cape of Good Hope as soon as I saw LAS PALMAS in the AIS Destination. It must be a 400+ nm back north to Gib from there.

                            My money is on the Cape.

                                Someone in another forum had some information that the hose from the poop deck was the drain from a new built AC plant on one of the upper decks. You can see the pipeline goes all the way to the top.
