It is the plaques of twin(sisters) cities of Oulan Bator.

Well done, Yves, though it is hard to decide who to declare a winner here, with Ombugge pouncing on Ulan Bator and you finding the final answer. There are very interesting articles on Wiki about both the country itself and its capital. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mongolia and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ulan_Bator
Reading through the former I was soon bamboozled by the constant flux of invasion, suppression, battles, victories and taking over by one warlord or another from one area or another. What a history!
I'll leave it to the two of you to decide the next poster.

        I think Ombugge got it.
In fact, after Ivy said this puzzle has nothing to see with flight destinations I thought about a list of twin towns and typed the names appearing on the plaques but in vain. Maybe it would have been more efficient to search in English than in French…
When Ombugge found Oulan Bator , it became easy for me to get the solution for the second question.

          Re: What place is this?

Is it a coincident or what???
I have just returned from Nepal, one of three countries in West, South and North Asia I have never been to before. The other two being Laos and Mongolia.
I'll now have to see if I can manage to make a visit to these last two as well in the not too far future.
(Of the "stans" I have only visited Pakistan and Kazakhstan)

As for who get the "credit", I'll be happy to defer to Yves, since I don't have any ready subject to propose.
(Alternatively, any "new" puzzler who would like to try his/her luck)

It was certainly a strange coincidence, Ombugge. Thinking of some relatively unknown place in which to stick my pin, I hit upon the eastern side of Russia to start with and then wandered into Mongolia. When I saw your Nepal pics. I held my breath because I didn't know how far you might travel after that!

                  Re: What place is this?

I'm almost sorry to be quickly on to this one, Yves, but I obviously chose the correct words to persuade Google to smile on me. This is the Great Clock in Rouen. I found some interesting facts at http://wikimapia.org/2104015/The-Gre...e-Gros-Horloge. This is interesting and I knew nothing about this before, so I'm grateful that you chose it.

Hallo James, welcome to CaptainsVoyageForum. I know you'll find plenty to interest you here and, as you have soon found this particular thread, do join us in searching the world! Sometimes we hit on the location of the puzzle picture quickly, but sometimes we roam all over the continents and oceans, up mountains and along creeks for days before we triumph. It's great fun.
But there is much else to explore on the forum. Enjoy it - and post!

James, as it's my turn to post the next puzzle I'm wondering if you would like to take it over and post one, I'm sure you have plenty of interesting photos to get us thinking. I have long since run out of mine so I choose one from a site where Creative Commons operates and one can use photos from there so long as they are properly attributed. I'm sure you will know about that, and it is a good source of images. I look forward to your pic..
