We're thinking!! Not sure I've seen bunting like that too far from home.

I'm guessing we're in Europe? (Not out of any conviction, but just to try to get us down to at least the nearest continent).
        Cheers,

        Mark.

I see some prayer flags. Are we in a Buddhist country, or at least a country with lots of Buddhists???

This is very far from home, Mark and not in Europe.

With such a turbulant history it's difficult to say what the "official" religion is today, but I hope it's safe to say that Buddhists are in the majority.

China has a very diverse religious background, depending on where in China you are. I don't think this is within China as it is defined today.
Let us try somewhere close, with Buddhism as as a prime religion.
We must be within the China sphere of influence, but not within China???

It has certainly been within the China sphere of influence at various times in its past, and not only the China sphere. But also the reverse can be said.

Well, there is only one country that can claim to have had a real influence on China, all others have been the other way around.
China was ruled by Mongols for several centuries, which had very strong influence on the way China was and is ruled, even by today's nominally Communist rulers.

I think we are in Mongolia and then most likely in the capital, Ulan Bator, but the second question escapes me???

Excellent. Ulan Bator it is. Now the second question? It shouldn't be too hard.
