Next guess: Tian Shan Mountains in North Eastv Kirgisistan.

It looks like one of these mountain ranges along the Southern border of the former USSR. Is at least that correct?

Very well done Ombugge, you are of course correct. Lydford Gorge on the edge of Dartmoor in Devon. I would have been more than happy with just Lydford Gorge, but you even narrowed it right down to the exact part of the gorge - the devils cauldron. A lovely place to visit, i went there with my daughter Alix a couple of weeks ago, so the photo was one of my own (but i still added the "Photo will be accredited once puzzle is solved" bit, just to throw you all off the scent just a little.)

A couple more photos from our visit.

Taken from the path that leads down to the cauldron.

Looking back from the platform with the railings.

And one taken from above, the cauldron and platform are below the walkway you can see here.

I am relieved this one was solved before this afternoon because i am away for the weekend and would not have been able to answer questions, so perfect timing Ombugge.

So, back to our latest puzzle.

...so i would have been quicker with the womans puzzle...

So we continue with my guess from before. Ombugge stepped in but didn't see it probably...

Next guess: Tian Shan Mountains in North East Kirgisistan.

Not Tian Shan Mountains and not on the boarder of the former USSR. Some connection to Russia, however.

You have said no to the Caucasus and above you say not the Tian Shan mountains nor the border of the former USSR. That still leaves a lot of Russia/Ussr to be considered. Apart from the mysterious "connection", are we then to steer clear of it as far as location is concerned?

That is correct, "connection" not "location".

If there is a connection to Russia, should i have a closer look to Alaska?

I am also going to concentrate on Alaska, seeing that it once belonged to Russia. Could that be the connection, Ombugge?

That is the connection. Now it is just to figure out which mountains there.
