      Re: What place is this?

That must be the Santa Croce Basilica in Firenze (Florence), Italy.
Built in late 13th century, but the facade completed only in 1863:

There are a number of these Tuscany Gothic style churches in Italy, but I think this is the right one, since others appears to be more heavily decorated.
      Kiki, please confirm.

Oh dear, I've been too busy on other things to join in this thread recently, having given up on Ombugge's Sierra Nevada thread because I really hadn't a clue - last seen slithering around lost in the Urals! Extremely well done on that, Steve. Then when I next peeked I found so much had happened.
Quite sure you are right on this one, Ombugge. I visited Santa Croce a while after the disastrous overflowing of the Arno in 1966 when the basilica was flooded. They had the beautiful Cimabue crucifix laid out in a side-chapel and it was pitiful to see its ruinous state. Then by one of those happy coincidences I was in the Royal Academy in London a year or so later and discovered that they had the Cimabue there and restoration work was in progress. I had not known this and could hardly believe my eyes as I watched them working.

British EMPIRE!!! What Empire??? That is gone long ago.
(Pretty soon there may not even be United Kingdoms)

PS> There are places where they are driving on the left without having been British Colonies.

Speaking as a proud member of the 'Wess8x Liberation Front' (that was censored by our beloved system - the '8' is an 'e', and that refers to the Kingdom that covered much of the south western side of the British Isles long before we were a United Kingdom!) - I wonder: with Ombugge the last comment could mean everything - or nothing. So .. just in case it was a cryptic clue .. somewhere where they drive on the correct side of the road, but not formerly part of Queen Victoria's collection:

                            Is it Japan Ombugge?

OK, so one more direct question, then I'm off air for a while ...

Are they indeed driving on the left hand side of the road?
