Hi GUYS!! I'm here!!!!!

I’m sitting in the Bistro right now….13:30 on Thursday. We left Capetown at 1800 yesterday.

None of you prepared me for the beauty of Capetown. It is amazing. We had three phenomenal days there.

We arrived at 9pm and were in our room at the Mount Nelson (the “pink hotel” haha) by 10pm. Mama and I were both tired, and enjoyed a good night’s sleep, although it had been quite pleasant on the trip over on a Delta 747. We hired a driver for a half day tour on Monday, and he was top-drawer! He took us over to the “other side” of Table Mountain and the mountain they call Lion’s Head to some beautiful bays. I’m glad I have sort of figured out the manual setting on my camera, so I could set the shutter speed really high and catch those waves! Tony then drove us around town, showing us Parliament, explaining to us about apartheid, showing where colored housing (conveniently located across from the factories) was torn down when coloreds were resettled in the suburbs…took us to Cecil Rhodes Memorial (and the South African Air Force or somesuch was practicing aerial flybys—wished for you, Big S!), finishing off by dropping us off at the cable car up to the top of Table Mountain. The views were un-believable.

By the time we got home, we had a walk around the grounds and got cleaned up for dinner. The Cape Colony restaurant is in the hotel, and it was superb. Service impeccable, food wonderful. I had ostrich and a wonderful bottle of Chardonnay (Meerlust 2007) that I really liked. Mama had scallops and “crayfish” – the latter being a tail about 4 inches long.

Day 2, and after breakfast, we hopped on the shuttle to the ship, and were aboard before noon. A quick lunch in the Dining Room (CDR to you, J-O), and we went back on the shuttle to do a little shopping. I found the springbok skins my friend requestd…and I bought some South African wine to enjoy in the room, (well, why not??? When in Rome……) Got back in time for dinner, to find that my cousin Andy’s cabin mate from his days working on Serenity, Sven, as our wine guy. We had a great catchup visit …with more to follow. I just love my Crystal family!!!

Wednesday was an amazing day. Full day excursion, and I can’t believe how much we saw. Loaded up at 8:15 in the cloudy mist and headed down to the Cape of Good Hope. By the time we arrived at the first viewpoint, the clouds had disappeared (or maybe we had outrun them….) Spectacular images of the ocean(s) on both sides of the point. Amazing water colors. Went up to the lighthouse point. We had lunch next to the Penguin colony, and the clouds caught up with us. As we all know I am neither sugar or a wicked witch (well, totally) I gave my poncho to one lady, my umbrella to another. The penguins were all adorable cuteness, as penguins are wont to be. Got soaking wet and absolutely filthy leaning over the railing to catch photos of them. Well, typical of me…playing in mudpuddles and all. Next time, I know not to wear a white t-shirt…….

After the rainy penguin parade, we got back on the coach and headed back up the penisula toward Capetown. Driving through fields of vineyards, we arrived at the Kirstenbosch Gardens for a quick visit—barely 45 minutes. I dried out just in time to get misted on again….I will say I looked…um….bedraggled to say the least. Beautiful flowers, and the texures in the foliage made for MAD photo taking. I’ve never seen such a variety of greens and textures…almost made the colorful blooms secondary. Then it was back to Serenity for muster (I’m always fashionable in big padded neon orange life vests).

Mama and I had been clever enough to make a reservation at Silk Road last night at 7:30 so we didn’t miss sail away. We parked ourselves on the stern at Lido’s outdoor deck, which NO ONE seems to know about. Had it all to ourselves. Oh, Gawd, how I wished for each and every one of you. Seriously. When I win the lottery and have more money than God, the first thing I am doing is booking all of us on a cruise…I want us all to sail out together…We had tugs, we had floating oil rigs that had been towed in, we had containers ships and tankers of every size and description, we had pirate ships, we had seagulls, we had stern thrusters…. We were late leaving, as the tugs that have to monitor our movements (totally unnecessary, but someone needs jobs, I guess) were late. Captain Edvardsen, as cousin Suzanne would say,”turned this puppy around on a dime” and we headed out. There was the local “Wednesday Afternoon Regatta” going on from the Yacht Club and the wind was strong, so the sailboat were amazing---I had fun watching them switch tacks and zigzagging with each other. They were wildly heeled over and some almost lost it a couple of times when coming about.

Dinner at Silk Road was perfection as usual. I was piggy- had BOTH the three crème brulee dessert AND a side scoop of sesame ice cream. Master Edvardsen AND the hotel director were dining across from us….lots of gold braid….. Caught up with another of my wine guys Oleg (who was missing from my leg of the world cruise lst year).

The Crystal “Olympics” are on this leg, to coincide with the real Olympics. The opening ceremony is the 14th. Wonder who will be sacrificed to King Neptune when we cross the equator. I’ve never seen the ceremony (or crossed the equator on a ship—that fact I’m keeping quiet about!!!) Tonight is Captain’s Welcome dinner, and tomorrow we go to Port Elizabeth (a maiden call) where mama and I leave the ship to fly to Londolozi and safari for two days. We meet the ship in Durban. Very Excited.

Well, that’s about all for now. It’s almost time for a lecture, then Asian buffet. I’ve signed up for the art course, which this leg is about stone carving. God only knows what I will come up with…….

I can’t say it enough. I wish you all were with me. I truly do. Will try to post some pics as soon as I can get them sorted out……

Elizabeth, I’m speechless –you have been an absolute sweetie to take time to write such a brilliant account of your time in Cape Town, and so well written that I really did feel I was along with you standing there on Lido deck. . . And photos too already! (and you know I love penguins almost as much as seagulls! )

Ummm hiding in the Bistro! – and I’ve had the computer lab permanently showing on the corner of my computer screen to no avail. Almost hoping Neptune will find you out as a punishment!!!!!!! (where is that evil grin smiley!)

But for now now this is my last day in touch – “our boys” will be extra busy with us both to stalk - NASA TV and the Olympics scarcely stand a chance!!!!
I’ll so look forward to catching up in just over a week. Meanwhile here are the views from YOUR port:

Sipping a glass of wine on the stern sounds wonderful. Since you suggested the idea I will buy a lottery ticket. Who knows, maybe we can get the whole croud together on the stern someday.

Where is Lady E hiding I wonder?

Heading to exotic Zanzibar as we speak..

Hey darlings!!! Back from inland safari--geez- it was so amazing...I can't begin. But suffice to say that in 3 days I took over 2000 photos.....can't wait to share with you. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart for stalking me and making me feel so special.

I will write more later, but I have been up since 5am (morning game drives start early), .....so I am ready for sleep. For all you chilly ones, the high temperature yesterday was 39 c in Londolozi. And I hear from Georgia that middle of nowhere had 2 inches of snow.

Pak- will get my act together and go to the computer lab sometime in the next day or so and sms you when I do...

My dear love to you all!!!

Glad you are doing well and I'm thrilled that you are having a ball on board!

Must be great seeing all those animals but I fear it's going to take you some 3 to 4 years sorting all those images...

And just how long has it taken YOU to post some of your Thai threads, hmmmmm??? 555555

(What's good for the goose is good for the gander....)

Just had our "security muster" to learn about what we do if pirates decided to become interested....YES, I took a few photos.......my muster station is the casino, as it is for a few of the crew, including a few of my "wine-guy" friends-
so if the pirates come, at least we will have a few bottles of wine to see us through!!!

Lady E on security duty in the Casino?

Wadda'ya say, you going to play (strip) poker with the pirates and if they loose, they go home: but if they win, what do they get?

I don't think the wine is for drinking Lady E: they are for making molotow ****tails... (naturally, you may drink the wine first).

Actually, as the world cruise games began last night, I did suggest the cruise director discuss adding "Somali Skeet Shooting" to the list of sports.....and he said that might have worked with Captain "Otto" or Captain Maalen.....

Have been busy today and haven't gone through my photos...I'm taking a stone carving class and it's FASCINATING!!!!!! I'm loving it.......but I am very dusty right now!!! More soon!!!!!!
