Many new pages and lots of new material has been added to the main page again....
Still, there are an equal amount of requests for material, information and details to all the pages (not only the France/ Norway - pages). That is, in case anyone really wishes to help out sometime!

Jan-Olav, I have just been looking through the additions you have been making to the main site. Some very interesting stuff indeed. The site really is becoming very comprehensive. I have to say I found your treasured 'cut away' diagram extremely interesting. What a wonderful thing to own. The detail on it is amazing - I have just spent ages looking at it. Just so many different spaces and compartments. It must be so strange for you looking at the drawing, looking at spaces and even rooms that you yourself must have spent so much time in. I can imagine that looking closely must bring out lots of emotions for you. I feel privileged to be able to look at such a wonderful document.
I have to ask a question though, do you know how they used to get the cars that were being carried into the aft storage area just above the prop shafts? That is puzzling me no end! I didnt think there was access big enough from the stern deck to get cars down there, do you know if there was some way of moving the cars from the forward stowage area to that area above the shafts? Or were there large enough shell doors and lift located aft?

My dream is to make this site the best resource for SS Norway information, but in order to do so, I have come to the realization that it is not possible without the help of volunteers. There is no way I'll be able to gather, write, and prepare all the needed information which I wish to display. It is therefore I continuously beg and ask for assistance and information. I apologize for being so consistent and for begging so often, but it's my dream to finish the site some day.

Very nice detailed stuff Jan-Olav.
FYI, the LIBERTE was not replaced by the ILE DE FRANCE, the two were running mates for a eight years until the ILE DE FRANCE retirement in November 1958. Her last years before her demise were certainly the most interesting as she rescued passengers from the sinking ANDREA DORIA, ran aground, saw a violent storm and was a star of film called The Last Voyage- albeit in a negative manner. I've read books that say 1957 was the year that air travel ruled, and I also have read 1958 as well so we will need to find the references. |

Your most welcome. You could mention that the LIBERTE was given to the French line as reparations as a result of the loss of the NORMANDIE which is how they wound up with a former German ship, the EUROPA of 1927.
I have found two places that mentioned 1958 as the year the carried more passengers by air, one is 50 Famous Liners(Miller), the other is RMS Queen Elizabeth, The Ultimate Ship(Harvey). I believe 1957 has also been used, but I will have to look in my library in what book that was mentioned. The year 1958 has always been credited with the year the Boeing 707 came on line (NY to Paris in October of that year). Although it was not the first jet in the air, it was the most successful. This particular aircraft significantly cut the air travel time down I understand, and a bit more comfortable from the usual airplanes that were filling the skies. So your right there. Hope this helps!

If you would be so kind, could you help me narrate the short opening for why SS France was built, based on what we already have. I'm a bit confused about the predecessors of France, the Liberte and Ile de France.
![]() How would you have narrated that short part? That is, if you have a time off course... no pressure.

Thanks for clearing that one up for me Jan-Olav, i will rest much easier now knowing how they got those cars down there! I never realised there was a hatch there. Im presuming that thats one hatch that did not survive the conversion into the Norway? Or was it still there tucked away underneath the new 'hanger' deck? I wonder how many off the France's original crew ever sailed on her after the conversion to the Norway? It must have been very strange for them, I bet they did a lot of exploring!

I do remember that we occasionally had ex-France crew members sailing as guests, they were incredibly knowledgeable about their ship and as all French guests on board, extremely passionate about her.
