Here is a question for our members that are stuck with a slow internet connection:
Do any of you find that some pages take quite a long time to load up? Obviously i am referring to pages that contain a great deal of wonderful images. At the moment the forum is set up to allow 20 posts per page, and each post can contain a maximum of 10 images. So in theory it is possible that some pages could contain 200 images. Though obviously in reality most pages will probably contain half of that possible amount. But that could still be a good 50 - 100 images per page on some threads. Does anyone find this a bit of a problem? I have a connection speed of about 800kbps (fastest possible speed for my area ), and i do find that all of the pages that contain lots of photos do take quite a while to load. And with Firefox, the images keep moving around whilst the page loads, so it's very hard to read anything until the page is fully loaded. If i do not have a lot of time, i must admit i do find myself shying away from pages that i know will contain lots of large images, i go back to them when i have more time. I have increased my browser cache size to 500mb so that it stores pages for longer without overwriting them, but it is still a problem sometimes. If this is also a problem for other readers, would it make sense to limit each page to say 10 posts? Thus the page would load in half the time. I think that maybe some new visitors to the forum that have slower internet speeds may be put off from viewing some threads due to the loading time. What are your views on this CV members?

I was playing around with the USER CONTROL PANEL here...and found that I could change the number of posts per page from the standard default of 20. I put it at 5 because I hate scrolling......would that speed things up????

Just dropping by very briefly to see what you all have been up to...
![]() As Steve mentions, I also find that a problem occasionally, but thank heaven for a very fast connection... ![]() Normally, I try to post only 2-3 images per post... 5 at the max, because as you also mention, it is sometimes a bit annoying waiting for all the images to fully load before being able to read the last post...

I just noticed that I have been promoted to Master Mariner on CVF.
The last time that happened was 40 years ago. ![]() ![]() Just out of curiosity, did that happen at 1500 or 1600 posts?? |

Well, it is a hell of a lot better title than "Vice Captain".
At my age there isn't all that much Vice I can participate in. ![]() ![]()

Okay, once again i am confused.
.......At what number post was i promoted up from Chief Officer to Vice Captain? I am guessing 1300. But here is the confusing bit, i have just noticed that Asimut is on post number 1481, and yet he is still a Chief Officer, how come he missed his promotion? I am wondering if the 'Official Photographer' title managed to confuse the system? That is my earth shattering observation for the day, reverting back to searching for strange fireballs on the internet!

Another question re: Vice Captain; What does he do on a Cruise ship???
(I assume he is not in charge of the Vice going on)

Asimut shall receive his well deserved promotion promptly, this will be taken care of right away! Thanks for letting me know!
This is the ranks of CV, as far as I can recall right now: 10 posts = CV Officer Apprentice 50 posts = CV 3rd Officer 200 posts = CV 2nd Officer 400 posts = CV 1st Officer 700 posts = CV Navigation Officer 1.000 posts = CV Chief Officer 1.300 posts = CV Vice Captain 1.600 posts = CV Master Mariner 2.500 posts = CV Commodore And to ombugge's question, what does a Vice Captain of a cruise ship do: he is normally the one in overall charge of the deck department, the interior maintenance, crew discipline, and the captain's immediate second in command. He is also normally in charge of budgeting and certain supplies of the ship, including dry docking jobs. I think this is more or less the same on most ships, but there might be differences.
