You are right Ralf – and in that last photo you can see the German film crew who were making a documentary.

Default Greenland #3 – Excursion to "The Red Desert"

Although I have been talking about the kind of photography pakarang would enjoy in the small towns and settlements of Greenland, and although we have now arrived in Uummannaq, I make little apology for this next selection of images which undoubtedly come under the category of “conventionally beautiful and photogenic”!

There was the possibility to spend half a day on an optional excursion to a place sometimes referred to as The Red Desert. The geological aspects interested me, but this excursion by small local boat was also one of the finest opportunities for getting close up to icebergs.

The excursion boats were able to make use of Fram’s landing stage normally used for her Polar Cirkel boats.

I was photographing the rocks when suddenly the other boat came into view and we almost seemed to be having a race while each group of bright blue-clothed passengers photographed each other! Their photos will show my group’s boat against a backdrop of icebergs . . .

. . . like these!

The colour contrasts of sky, sea and ice, and the increasing yellow and red of the rocks is stunning.

The color in those images are absolutely .... amazing!

You were so lucky with the sunshine and background blue skies.. they are large poster size perfect!

The colours become even more intense as we arrive at the landing place. Can you see the passengers from the other boat are already far up the mountainside?

Blue jackets make a pleasing contrast with the desert.

It was so interesting to also look across the water and see the sedimentary strata of the cliff face.

In places plant life is evident . . .

. . . seen here in detail, along with the deposits of sulphur, salt and quartz. . .

. . . and the ochre colours of iron minerals.

I took so many pictures of this iceberg, but they are all different!

We saw not only the best viewpoints, but also the best examples of rocks like this

. . . thanks to the local guide who was truly excellent, capable of communicating to all at a simple level with enjoyment and enthusiasm as well as responding in depth to those with more complex questions.

And so we descended the cliff back to the boats, with time to enjoy our packed lunches before our return journey. The photo opportunities were spectacular. I love images like this as semi-abstract compositions . . .

. . . but then the other boat came into view, imparting a sense of scale and making an entirely different kind of photograph.

It just got better and better as some local folk out fishing could be seen against a passing iceberg.

Suddenly there was something irresistible to photograph in every direction (and I must reminding you that we were moving at some speed by this time, and had to keep our footing on the small outside deck and hopefully avoid getting in the way of each others cameras!)
There was a glacier some distance away on one side . . .

. . . and the spectacular cliffs on the other . . .

and in between, close encounters with icebergs. I am going to end this section of my Greenland travels with two images of the most amazing iceberg I have ever seen.

Beautiful photos, as always, Cecilia...

(But I would have had trouble moving the camera off of the gorgeous guide)

Have fun, you two. I have no problem with that.

Me, i prefer chatting with HurtigruteMartin about the female employees aboard Hurtigruten...

...like #88 in this thread:

Default Svalbard Cruise

I came across a website with a detailed report from a Svalbard Cruise on board Nordstjernen, with detailed and well written captions:
http://europeforvisitors.com/cruises...gen-cruise.htm

I didn't know whether to post it in this thread or in the "Nordstjernen" thread, so I'll post it in both.
