    Found this about the vessel.
FastCat Ryde was built in Singapore for service in the Philippines as Water Jet 1. Wightlink bought the craft in 2000 and following an extensive refit she entered service on the Portsmouth-Ryde service in August 2000.

You could say that, in a way....
She was built as "Water Jet 1" for a Philippines owners back in 1995 by Kvaerner Fjellstrand Yard in Singapore.
In 1999 she was renamed "Supercat 17" and was sold in 2000 to Wighlink to be used between Portsmouth and Ryde.
Her sister is "Fastcat Shanklin"....., as far as I know....

EDIT: Shoot..., beat me by a couple of minutes there, Øistein...

Yes you are correct Sterkoder, 'Fastcat Shanklin' is indeed her sister.

Also on the same route for the same operator is the older HSC 'Our Lady Pamela'. She was built in Hobart, Tasmania in 1986, along with her now scrapped sister 'Our Lady Patricia'. Both vessels were ordered especially for the Portsmouth/Ryde crossing.
'Our Lady Pamela' was delivered under her own power directly from the builders in Tasmania, so she had already clocked up many thousands of miles before she had even reached her new owners!
'Our Lady Patricia' on the other hand was delivered to Antwerp as deck cargo on a larger vessel.

All three of the current HSC are due to be retired and replaced later this year.

    'Our Lady Pamela'

    Name: HSC Our Lady Pamela
    Operator: Wightlink
    Route: Ryde to Portsmouth
    Builder: Incat, Hobart, Tasmania
    Launched: 1986
    Maiden voyage: 1986
    In service: 1986
    Fate: In Service
    General characteristics
    Tonnage: 312
    Length: 29.5 m
    Beam: 11.8 m
    Draught: 2.20m
    Installed power: 2869kw
    Speed: 29.4 knots
    Capacity: 395 passengers
    Crew: 4-5

This is what the replacements will look like. This is 'Wight Ryder 1', which was completed at the Cebu shipyard in the Philippines about a month ago.

You will see from the information below that the new vessels will be a lot slower, and will not carry as many passengers. So i am not sure if this could be called progress. Though they do say that the new vessels will be able to continue operating in rougher sea conditions when compared to the current vessels.

    Length Overall 40.00m
    Length Waterline 38.60m
    Beam overall 12.00m
    Draft 1.60m
    Speed 20 Knots
    Passengers 260
    Bicycles 20
    Flag UK - HSC 2000 Cat A

I also feel that 'Fastcat Shanklin' and 'Fastcat Ryde' are much nicer looking vessels than the replacements.

Very nice addition to the thread! It's been a long time since i have seen one of those shooting across the Solent!

I think we should find a picture of one of the Red Jets to add to the thread.
(I've not got any because i'm a Wightlink customer myself)

Yep! I would love to see Red Jet represented on here. Although I must admit to prefering the Red Funnel Ferry instead, I could down a few beers before arriving at Cowes. Only problem was a lack of memory on the return journey. Oooh, they were the days!!

    Great photos!

That's "Ladejarl" departing Edøy at Smøla, with Edøy church in the background.
Next stop after Edøy southbound is Kristiansund...

"Kystekspressen" between Kristiansund and Trondheim is a 3:20 hours sea voyage in great nature and much to see...

I also got an image of Stjernøy as she passed Rørvik last Sunday, and stopped for a few minutes for some bunker oil... I'll get them off loaded from the camera shortly.

But I think, your images are way better than mine...
