A typical Thai Fishing Boat arriving at Songkhla:

Great one! I love these fishing boats... went out on night fishing once a long time ago with some fishermen... think it was back in 2000 out of Tak Bai in southern Thailand...... We left the shore in the evening, fished through the night and returned at noon the following day.

I especially remember a box that was hung over the stern: the restroom (with a hole in the floor for droppings... ) I see this one doesn't have such an installation.

Unfortunately, the images from that trip is gone (among those that could not be saved after a hard-drive crash a few years back).

What were we fishing? I can't really remember.

Based on the large Light Bulbs on an outrigger and looking at the gear she carries, I would say she is most likely a Squid Jigger:

If they had been catching schooling fish attracted by light they would most likely also have carried a Seine Net, which they don't.
In any case there must be a fairly good catch on board, looking at the free board. (No load line here)

This appears to be a multi-purpose Fishing boat used for short trips, over night or max. 1 week duration, and able to use many types of Fishing gear, incl. Trawl, depending on the season and what is in demand at the time.

Just got to think about it, Sunda Kelapa sounds like a Malaysian name, leading me to think that this is either a bad Thai translation or just simply an Malaysian fishing vessel.

Do you know if this is likely to be for local eating or do they sell them to exporters?

A bit of both I would think. Thailand is a major exporter of many kind of Seafood, incl. Calamaris.

Actually Sunda Kelapa is the name of the famous old port near Jakarta, Indonesian, but the boat is typical Thai style.
She is big enough to go to Indonesia to fish on Indonesian "quota", hence Indonesian register may be a necessary formality. It is not that far away to Indonesian EEZ in the South China Sea.
The boat next to her appears to have same home port.

Here is some pics from Sunda Kelapa taken last year, with typical Indonesia "Prahu" (or "Bugis Schooners") loading and discharging cargo, but no Thai style fishing boats:

Ah... I thought I had heard that before! Cool.. agree with you, she is a tyical Thai style fishing vessel and if I were to guess her building place, I would say Samut Songkhram (Thailand).

On June 24th 2009, I spotted the fishing vessel Båregutt towing another fishing vessel southwards... not able to read the name of the "towee"... but it looks like something starting with NON..... LFUK / T29L:

Fishing boats certainly comes in all shapes and types, no doubt... There is a lot of interesting "catch" in this thread now... and I'm pleased to see there is still additional vessels being added.

Depending on their area of operation, they are especially and typically rigged for harvesting the oceans in different ways as effective as possible with the technology and resources they have at hand.
