Last week i was on holiday on the Isle of Wight. Whilst enjoying a drink sitting outside my favourite pub on the beach at Shanklin, (See favourite pub's thread) i discovered a nice new hobby - namely hijacking my son's 'i phone' and using it to track and identify passing ships. Also was very good to be able to name all of the ships in the Nab anchorage.

Here is a link to the Vessel Tracker AIS add on for Google Earth.

Just download it and open it - it will open up Google Earth and load up AIS data.
It's the free version, so it does have a 24 hour delay, but still interesting.

Word of warning, if your computer is not that powerful it will take a couple of minutes for it to load all of the AIS data into Google Earth. But once it's loaded it takes no extra computing power to use it. If you click on the icon for a vessel it will take you to the vessel tracker.com page for that vessel.

If anyone is interested in marine traffic movements in and around the Portsmouth, Southampton and Solent areas, this is a good site.

One thing i enjoy very much is that you can also listen in to all the marine radio traffic in the area. Just click on the media player button and you will get a panel that lets you switch between various channels. I quite like to listen to channel 11, Portsmouth QHM.

With over 800 vessels within port limits at any given time and many at anchor just outside, or just passing in the Strait without stopping.
