CAR FERRIES from all over the world
How about making a special car-ferry thread for car ferries from across the world. I open the thread with this veteran carrying the name Eiksund.

This is an old ferry, which I'm not sure is still alive or not: her name was Vågan and on this image, she sailed under the house flag of Vesterålens Dampskipsselskap (Steamshipcompany).

Back to Norway, I spotted this ferry all the way outside Trondheimsfjord on December 2nd 2008. I'm not sure of it's name and route, but it's an old design and I'm sure Sterkoder may have some information on her..

from Kylerhead (Isle of Skye) to Glenelg (Scottish mainland).
Now a community owned ferry because Skye has a bridge from the mainland. The Kylerhea Narrows has a fast flowing tidal race where standing waves are common when wind is running over tide.

Car ferry "Olav Duun" normally traffics between Lund and Hofles, but yesterday, she was just about to complete a dry dock in Ottersøy: March 18th 2009:

Kristiansund Mech. & Shipyard, and we see from left "Bolsøy", "Haram" and "Goma" on land...
Close-up of "Goma"

"IF GOD COULD MAKE ANGELS...., WHY IN HELL MAKE MAN?"
"Glutra". She runs on LNG, and as a gas-ferry she's better for the environment than the diesel ferries...
"Eira" at Kristiansund Mech. & Shipyard (NB! Only named KMS in future posts)
"Tustna"

"IF GOD COULD MAKE ANGELS...., WHY IN HELL MAKE MAN?"
"Bjørnsund". This ferry sails between Kristiansund and Averøy, but will be obsolete (maybe not the right word) from the fall of 2009 when the underwater road-tunnel opens....
"Bjørnsund" is one of the largest ferries the ferrycompany has, but is rather small compared to "Norwegian Jade"...
"Bjørnsund" passing under the Sørsundet bridge in Kristiansund. (For those of you who has been travelling with a hurtigrute, this is the bridge they sail under in and out of Kristiansund)

Maaaaany cool ferries to study: and you got the prettiest one correct: nothing compares to Tingvoll....
Love some of the shots done above... I have myself traveled on quite a few of those at some point.
Thank you so much for that 'ferry-summary'!

Oh, Heavens-to-betsy I've got you using pretty without quotations......
Ok, J-O and Svein...educate me...what is it about Tingvoll that you like?
What sets her apart from, say, Linge? I see little things here and there--paint one way, bridge slightly different.... is it several little things, or memories??
Just curious...always looking to learn something!!
Cheers!!

Here's another picture of "Tingvoll".
Don't know exactly what it is, but there's something with her lines, the shape of her total appearance (help me with this word and the spelling).
Maybe it's something with the cleanness of her lines in the hull and superstructure.
New ferries are often more cubic whereas older ferries often are rebuilt from another design to look like, let's say "Linge"
In very early days ferries were designed so that you would have to drive on board, but back the car when driving back onshore.
Then the demands of the traffic made a demand for shuttle-ferries, sort of "drive-through" vessels with driving ports in both ends...., like "Tingvoll".
This ferry was among the first of the modern design in this ferry company back in the mid-70's, and I belive her being designed from the start to be a shuttle (bow in both ends) ferry, made her lines clean...
For example; I'm sure anyone can see the difference between let's say "Tingvoll" and "Svanøy". I guess "Tingvoll" was designed by engineers with passion for ships, whereas I guess "Svanøy" (and that kind of modern cubic vessels) were designed by young modern engineers/drawers who might not have the same feeling for shapes and slick lines...., but of course, I don't know...
Don't know if this was understandable...

"IF GOD COULD MAKE ANGELS...., WHY IN HELL MAKE MAN?"
Totally agreeable and understandable... Off course, there is no lounge or cafeteria above the car deck and all is kept below, but her profile makes her appear much longer and the slant of the deck at both ends and towards the middle, gives her a certain ... oh, how do I say it... 'spring'-feel....

yes--I understand....I think Sterkoder when you said "bow at both ends"-- the slight curve--that's what it is. She has a symmetry to her as well.
Me, ever being the non-practical one, looked at her and said..."wouldn't it be fun to enclose the center, add some windows, and it would make a glorious floating home..with huge decks.... you wouldn't need a second home for when the snow comes...just move her south for a few months.....
I know, I know...I'm strange.....
Cheers!!

When I wrote bow in both ends, I ment just that.
That's because when I wrote 'shuttle' further up here, I really ment pendulumshuttle.
That's because ferries of this type never turns around but rather sail back and forth like a pendulum.
All they have to do is to push the switch that change the lights from the lanterns.
When going in the direction it is on my last picture, the port light of course is red, but when going the other way, without turning the ferry, the ligt suddenly become the starboard light...., and so needs to be green...
There's no bow and stern on such ferries, the two ends act as both...
