It's the River Wye at Symonds Yat - a well known beauty spot since Victorian times, on the borders between England and Wales.

It's a bit like those 'Where's Wally' cartoons - look out for the dog hanging out over the edge, the driver hanging out of his window, the tea urn, the improbably large garden on the roof, the interesting selection of hoses and ropes at the back, the three horns on the front (there are two boats on this bit of river, not quite sure who needs to know of this one's presence), two Irish flags, one welsh flag, one Union Jack, etc., etc.
I have the idea the skipper is not that sure about his sailing skills with that much fenders.

Think you're quite right Jack - this is pretty much the bottom end of the nautical world, although a pretty enough boat in a beautiful place.

Maybe not as pretty as that last one from Mark, but a lot more "exotic":

Sight seening cum short river cruise boat at a pier in Samarinda, Kalimantan Timur, Indonesia. Waiting for tourists to show up.

Local Hotel Boats cruising the Mahakam River from Samarinda, locally known as Long Boats:

There are a lot of them plying this trade:

Trips can take 7 days or more and take you as far up river as far Long Iram approx. 200 km from the mouth. (175 km. from Samarinda)
    MIDDLE MAHAKAM RIVER
The village of Long Bagun, on threehundred kilometers from the spring of the Mahakam, is the final destination of traffic on the river, besides several longbot. The river reaches the small city of Long Iram through several more than 150 km long valleys, this is the final destination of the organised, heavy traffic. A big part of the year, smaller ships will continue the trip to Long Bagun, but a period of drought in the hinterlands can cause the waterlevel to drop very fast and make traffic impossible.

Seen on the Kennet and Avon Canal at the weekend - how about a floating Cheese Shop?

Or some hand made fenders, again made on and sold from a narrowboat.

Not really a passenger, cruise or hotel boat, but a working boat on the Kennet and Avon canal - way inland - near Bradford on Avon this morning.

This is the 'Coalboat' - hard to tell quite what you're looking at in the first picture, but in the second one you can see the diesel pump, the sacks of coal and the fire extinguishers! The boat next door is a floating hairdressers - didn't take pictures of that - thought I may get some strange looks.

Some more commerce on the canal. Back at the Dundas Aqueduct, barge Emily and tug Bronte are on their way towards Bradford on Avon - home and workshop for the floating Blacksmith.

I don't know how I've managed to miss this thread - but I have until now. And how I have been enjoying it. I remember the Henri Dunnant at #34 because we saw it on the weekend that Ralf, Thijs and I had last year when we went to Woudrichem.

I'm posting some old film camera photos of mine taken during a 5-day holiday I'd organised for a group several years ago. I'd booked a short trip on the Kennet Valley for us. Apologies for quality - it's the thought that counts!

Bonnie, the young horse who was to pull us. You can see how eager she is for the job!

And someone else's photo of me trying to cheer Bonnie up.

Lovely photos Ivy - proper horsepower! We don't see too many like that beauty on the towpath these days - although there are some very venerable petrol engines putt-putting along, but they're not quite as cute as horses with hairy feet.

Of course we do regularly see Shire horses working close to the canal - Wadworths brewery in Devizes still keeps them for local deliveries - and they're magnificent. http://www.wadworth.co.uk/shire_horses.html

Once i saw a report in our TV about these classic English canal boats. They look marvellous and so anachronistic. You can't believe that there are in fact people working with such kond of boats and living from that income. If you look at the river business conditions here on the continent, that seems unbelievable. But anyway, these people must be very special!

Oh thank you Mark. Mind you - that was ten years ago and my hair is a little greyer now.

So am I! He's probably still doing a fast crawl away from that Pacific atoll he was on about.

Hallo Jack - good to see you back posting. I wondered where you had got to, not having seen you around for a while.

Sunday night, Zwijndrecht. Avalon Luminary is lit up by the setting sun as she heads East.
