    Default Dredgers of the World

    We have pictures of several dredgers in various threads, but no thread dedicated to this very specialized type of vessels and barges.

    I'll start it off with some VERY special dredgers:

    Clearing Bukit Timah Canal, Singapore, using submersible pumps on rafts.
    Dredgers cannot be more basic than that.

    OK, before anybody say; "That isn't REAL dredgers", here is a really large Suction Trailer Dredger, the "Vasco da Gama" belonging to Jan de Nul Group in Belgium:

    One of the largest Dredgers in the world at 33,000 Cbm. hopper capacity. She is 201 m. long, 36.2 m. wide and max draft is 14.6 m. (60,000 Dwt.)

    Here is a picture of her "Rain bowing" somewhere, using her 8000 kW pump capacity. An impressive sight:

    A new and innovative Dredging method is presented in Maasmond Clippingnews today: http://youtu.be/cG6DfjXNoeE
    Developed by Damen it is presently designed for 200 m. WD and sand mining, but I can see where this can be scaled up and developed to work in much deeper water, such as for deep sea mining in up to +1000 m. WD, or even for nodules collection in up to 4000 m. WD.

    Here is a bit about the nodules that are found on the deep ocean floor and the attempts that has been made to develop a method to collect them in large quantities: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manganese_nodule;
    http://geology.uprm.edu/Morelock/resdeep.htm

    If I was a decade or two younger, this is where my interest and efforts would be.

    An unusual sight; a large dredger heading away from Singapore, full loaded:

    For years many of the largest dredgers in the world were busy bringing sand into Singapore, until Malaysia and Indonesia refused to allow sand mining in their waters.
