    Default The Millionaire Blog

    The Millionaire Blog

With dwindling visitor numbers to the CaptainsVoyage main page, I'm starting to wonder if all the pages I have made and constantly update, are still being read by the greater community.

I have toyed with the idea of closing the main page within time, because the visitor numbers are really on a cliff dive downwards.

One of the many blogs there is the "..if I was a Millionaire Blog.."

I would like to hear any comments or thoughts you all may be having and if they could generate some interest?

J-O, if you are satisfied that dwindling numbers is a true trend and not a temporary blip, why not consider incorporating the pages into the Forum? That way they would be live and easily available to both those searching only for one specific topic and casual browsers. The latter, in particular, quite likely visit the forum looking for one thing, then stay because they find so much more of interest, but don't become aware of the main site contents. It's like it used to be in the days of the encyclopedia (book form). I would go to look up one thing, then become so beguiled because as I flipped the pages other fascinating things would catch my eye. In the end, realising the time, I'd shut the book and go no further.
One point - it would mean sacrificing those topics that have no or little content, the ones for which you have appealed for help in the past. When you once mentioned deleting them, I remember suggesting that as they do no harm where they are it would be best to leave them in hopes that one day someone will come along to write or complete them. But if all the good stuff there is on the main site were brought over here, it would enrich the forum - not that it needs it.

    Dearest Ivy,

Thank you so very much for your heartfelt thoughts... some very interesting points you brought up there, some points which I shall keep in the back of my head.

I just realized, and it's maybe natural since many people thinks the main page is only about SS Norway (a ship now no longer on the oceans), that the visitor numbers keep on dwindling.

The last week, only a handful people had made the journey to the pages.

If I may ask: what would you (as in all of you) like to see added to the main pages? Any additional information, tips, help, stories... anything?

As long as you give me the password!!!!!

When it's grey and damp and chilly (I won't say cold...) here, I like looking at your Thailand pics....especially in the parks....waterfalls, green, sunny. And your stupas and Buddhas always give me a smile and a feeling of peace....

ok, and I'll admit it, some of your friends are cute, too....
    Cheers!!

Yes, your Ladies have been missing out really badly, but naturally were too proper and polite to say so!
But now you raise the matter…I’d been thinking for a while that we’ve suffered a “double whammy” of deprivation …all those tantalising missing image links on Old Forum which it seems (I’ve been looking at the comments in the help forums) have gone for good.
And then there were the images that used to be on Main Page, where it says “….these stories and these images have been moved…” but whilst the stories were, the images weren’t. Just when I was enjoying really looking at them too, rather than just fast scrolling through….and I’d only got as far as 1993 or 4!

But to return to the original question about Main Page rather than the private stuff….I’ll have a think about that and return with with my thoughts later.

Well, this particular lady has never even seen them.

Jan-Olav, are you using Google Analytics or somesuch? And how do the figures compare with, say, a year ago? I'm just wondering whether records show a steady decline - or whether viewing varies - when seen over a long period. You said I was passionate about tags, and I assume that individual Home articles are well covered?

If I may ask: what would you (as in all of you) like to see added to the main pages? Any additional information, tips, help, stories... anything?
    1) If the Home page is to remain where it is, I think a very clear demarcation line needs to be kept between the kind of article/photo series that appears on there and those entries in the Forum. Home pages are each specific to one topic and are mainly based around your own life story and experiences with one or two other more general ideas that somehow would not necessarily fit in on the Forum. It's a good format.
The Forum already has places for help and tips on various matters and it may complicate things to have parallel pages to search.
    2) One suggestion: you link the Home Page articles to the relevant thread in the Forum where appropriate, but are the Forum pages on e.g. the Maritime Interest threads which refer to specific shipping lines etc. linked back to the relevant Home Page? Maybe you have already done this, and I think it is important as probably a visitor would most likely land firstly on the Forum thread, but would then be drawn to check out the Home Page link, and gain by the experience. If this linking does not exist at the moment, then why not try it (more work!) and then see if that gradually boosts the figures?

The statistics has declined steadily over the last year, and only a handful number of people may drop by the main pages during a full month. Before, it could be somewhere in the vicinity of 300 per day on a slow day, and 600 on a busy day.

I have tried linking articles both ways, and keep the main page as a maritime andphotography related site, in addition to the personal touches of course.

And yes, the images from my life shall be returned some day again, but I think I will keep the majority of them in the private (password-required) Captains Quarters.

Well it doesn’t really add much, but here are some of the thoughts I promised anyway.

When Main Page was redesigned, the smart trendy modern look with that continuous string of subjects at the top looked great, but perhaps now is just a bit confusing, even though there is a CV page contents amongst them.

I’d tried really hard (actually a great deal of time), with those empty headings on Main Page, before I admitted defeat. I felt I didn’t have enough direct connection with the subject matter to write convincingly. That apart, I expect that most of us would feel happier contributing to the Forum, rather than Main Page which seems to demand a somehow higher standard – something more polished and professional and perfect – literally the “finished article”.

Maybe when time allows and you have absolutely nothing better to do, a rearrangement of existing material between biographical/professional/home page stuff and The Norway and other maritime stuff within Main Page (as well as the private stuff on the forum). Maybe even removing things from Main Page that are much more forum-like such as the Millionaire Blog itself!

But most of all dear Captain, stop worrying yourself about those visitor figures… (at least until you retire and have to sell your soul and turn web-commercial to keep yourself in Canon lenses and Apple desirables!)

    True words, Cecilia.

I would like also the clear difference in forum, where we all contribute - and main page, which is your baby, Jan-Olav. If we all have ever an addition for the main page, we can send this to you by pm or mail, can authorize you to use this information and you can use it.

I don't like to check out two platforms to see what is going on here.

I like the round and closed stories on the main pages, which naturally can also be an extract of the forum.

Can i define it in this way: forum is the workshop and main page is the exhibition???

Thank you so much to both Lady C and Ralf... and let me especially thank Ralf for this fantastic analogy!

As I've already mentioned in this blog a while ago, here is one of the things I really have had on my wish list for a long while now: the Binary Clock:

    http://www.captainsvoyage.com/captai...ristwatch.html

Recently, my father came to visit and he had a gift for me... a kind-of-feel-better-thing....: a Binary Watch from this very brand.

He gave me the 01 The One:

I guess I can now cross that one off my list.... it's kind of strange, I haven't worn a wrist watch for almost 16-17-18 years or so. It's an unusual feeling for me. But. With such a nice gift from my "papa".... I'll wear it for a long time!

I have my plain ol' Rolex that I bought in Switzerland 26 years ago.... (for what I thought was an astronomical $400...ah, when the dollar was so strong......) but this would be fun and funky and different.........sort of like my new image????????

Yeah, he is pretty darn cool....

If you look at the link from the main page, you can see how it is read... it's actually not that difficult. Quite genius I must admit.

Whoever sent you that note is a jerk. Ignore him or her.

Some people feel so rotten about themselves that they see someone else's hard work and effort and try to make themselves feel better by trying to pull the creator down to their level.

Does anyone know of a time when this has worked.

Darlin'- for all the mean-spirited people in the world who send you garbage, there are thousands...yes THOUSANDS- who see your work and are inspired to write, photograph, make a webpage, start a project, take on a challenge. And they seldom tell you they have been inspired. It's just human nature.

Ignore the jerks. Don't even let them know they got to you. If you do, then they have succeeded........

BTW, and FWIW, IMHO your blog is AMAZING. Just opening a page or two gives me an instant smile. It's my "go to spot" when I am down.
    Cheers!!
