Thank you for your explanation. I was wondering about the different photo locations and so these pictures are surely from a river cruise...?!

What is the square panel starboard side aft? The square on Ranger and the boat behind her it is blue while on Stavo it is light green and folded down.

    Hello Pilotdane

The blue board is used on European rivers, for upstream sailing ships, they deside witch side they take on the river. This means blue on blue, like red on red. During darkness there is a flashlight shown in the board.

When shipping sailing upstream wants to keep portside, to avoid the stream as much as possible she shows a blue board at her starboard side. Ships coming downstream shows the same board to let the other know she will also keep portside of the river. (Starboard at starboard)

The golden rule of sailing in any river, well charted or otherwise; ALWAYS take the outside in the bends.
Why? Because the deep channel will be likewise. Inside of the bends may be silted up and shallow.

In heavily trafficked rivers, like the Rhine etc., there is also the consideration of other traffic and a lot of rules for who have right of way at narrows and who have to wait, I assume?

I remember from Musi River, which is the river leading to Palembang and the refinery in Pladju, that there were such rules. Probably left behind from Dutch Colonial times.
