Fjordline orders new superferries at Fosen Yard

According to Adresseravisen, Fjordline will order 2 new super-ferries from bergen Group Fosen Yard at Rissa.

The contract is worth 1,7 billion NOK.

The ships is slated for delivery spring and autumn 2012. The hull will be built at the Polish yard Stocznia Gdansk, but the rest of the work will be done at Bergen Group Fosen.

The first hull will arrive just after the summer of 2011 and will give work to many, maybe as many as 5-600 people.

The ships will be 170 meters long, have 300 cabins and be able to carry 1500 passengers.

The two new ships will replace the aging Bergensfjord which Fosen built in 1993, also at Rissa.

In the above new superferry rendering, I must admit I do like the bow decoration. Reminds me very much of the decoration found on the Disney ships.

I'm a bit surprised that there are only 300 cabins for the 1500 passengers. With all double occupancy, that would be 600 people. With 150 of these 300 cabins double occupancy (300 people) and the rest maybe 4-person cabins, that would total another 300... giving a 900 person berth ferry.

As Sterkoder pointed out in another thread, it is speculated that the ferry will be operated on the Kristiansand - Hirtshals run. Longer voyages would be a problem based on the low berth availability.

That was also the argument on that other forum
(Sorry for posting another place. I'm at work, and had no time searching for any special thread on the subject).

If operated at the Kr.sand - Hirtshals run and a super speed the crossing is only at few hours. Most pax will probably "dance the night away" rather then sleep.

In an updated article at Dagbladet, it is now revealed she is due to sail between Bergen, Stavanger and Hirtshals.

I agree it's a bold move by Fjordline two buy two modern ferries for the run, but maybe they have deemed it as necessary for their survival. You don't get anywhere without taking risks, and they certainly make a statement here.

I believe it will be easier for them to sell out a modern cruise-like vessel, than an older ferry.

We must also remember, they probably finance a lot of the new ferries with the sale of the tonnage they have now.

I think it is exiting that two new ferries like this start operating out of the west coast.

....and just think about another exiting little detail:
They are to be built at Fosen, a ship yard close to your home, so maybe we'll see some shots one day during the building from your new Canon....?
(If there are suitable spots to take pictures from around the yard. And come to think of it, building a ship outside a huge hall might just be too old fashion).

I think you can surely expect, that if I'm still around and in this area, there will be a lot of pictures from the outfitting, and the arrival of the hulls...

A friend sent me these by e-mail: not sure where he got them from, but from what I can see, these are great renderings of the ship with lots of details to study.

Thank you for posting the deck plan. It really interesting to see how she is laid out. I just wish I could zoom in for a better look.

Here is a link that will give you a zoom-able pdf; http://fjordline.no/getfile.php/1217...nye%20skip.pdf

I notice there are space for future Fuel Gas Cylinders to enable the ferries to switch to LPG in the future. (Not mentioned anywhere I have seen).

Would someone explain to me the accommodations page...what do they mean by (2x2 persons-does this mean there are bunkbeds in all the cabins? Surely not, but it adds up that way!!!!
    Cheers!!

Where it says 2+2 cabins it's possible to fit 4 people in that cabin - in bunk beds that can be folded down from the bulkhead. If only two pople are using the cabin there would probably be a sofa (that can be turned into a bed by a "grip") and one lower bed on the opposite side. The two upper bunk beds are then not in use and are secured along each bulkhead (I hope my explaination gives you an idea )

I believe it is known as Pullman bunks. Originally used in train sleepers.

So in actuality...the usual pax count would be about half that...the MAXIMUM would be what they state?

I mean, if two adult couples are travelling together, the chances of them sharing one cabin with one bathroom (especially if two of the adults are female) decrease as their ages increase..........
    Cheers!!

Yes Lizzie, you could put it that way

During my college days it was quite common to take a two day party onboard one of the overnight ferries to Denmark. Back then I wouldn't mind share a cabin with three others (or more...). But now - if me and my wife were to go on a trip like this with someone, we would most likely book two cabins

Share a small cabin with three women??? I am not sure if that would be a blessing or a curse.
