Re: [Vistafjord: Caronia; Saga Ruby] and [Sagafjord: Gripsholm; Saga Rose]

That is very sad news, but to be honest, this was bound to happen sooner than later. I should imagine that the old girl is getting rather tired in her old age. I should imagine that a lot of her pipe work is nearing the end of it's useful life - plumbing, fresh water, fire sprinklers, etc. Very costly to replace on a cruise ship i should imagine. Plus it must be getting harder with each year to meet all the strict emission and safety rules. Sadly the list of these kind of classic ships still in service is getting shorter.
Your charts, your radar, your eyes and ears - if all 4 agree, you may proceed with caution.

What I find terribly sad is that we are loosing classical ships in a fast pace that is probably unparalleled in history.

I can only hope that the Saga Ruby gets a second life as a hotel ship like the SS Rotterdam or the MS Veronica. It deserves that much.

Would anyone be interested in the idea of having the Vistafjord become a hotel ship in Oslo, Norway? It's too bad that Mr. Kloster hasn't considered the idea of buying the name NAL from Cunard and making the brand independent once again. Perhaps it could be used to have a MS Norway as its flagship.

A friend of mine sent me this photo a few weeks ago... it's either Vista- or Sagafjord he says... I really don't know, and it doesn't matter, but the photo is awesome, and sadly, I don't know who to credit.

Will she be scrapped prematurely because of engine problems her last year in service?

You're right..., it does not matter, because the picture is awesome.
But one thing is for sure, it's not SAGA ROSE (ex. Sagafjord), because she was equipped totally different on the bow deck (bakken).
Main differences being two cargo cranes and a cargo hatch where there's a swimmingpool in the picture from your friend.

About an early scrapping of SAGA RUBY:
I don't know nothing about that, but from the article in one of the links you posted, it seems like spending £4 millions (NOK 40 millions) just to sail for yet another 11 months seem a bit "overkill". In short, if Saga scrap her now, they will save A LOT of money (as I can't imagine the income from the rest of the cruise programmes exeed the expences of upgrading and running the ship towards retirement in January 2014).

I'd like to "nudge" this thread up again with this video I recently found online.

Wish it was in full HD though.

They certainly do not build them like this anymore - which in itself, is quite a tragedy I think:

"Oasia" ex.Saga Ruby arrived Bhavnagar (India) today and anchored in anticipation of its final journey to the beach at Alang to be dismantled.
For this is the end of a fantastic voyage for this cruise ship started back in 1973.
                          Sad but true.

I will honor the ship with a picture from Tromsø taken on March 25, 2009

That is a true beautiful picture of a Lady at the end of her journey... too sad to think about her being at the place she is now.

"Oasia" was beached wednesday afternoon in Alang.
They left the anchorage area and turned off the AIS transmitter.
This was the last voyage for "Oasia" and she is now history.

Oh...... how terribly sad to see her go. I had no personal connection to the ship other than remember seeing her a lot during my childhood years. She was such a beautiful vessel. Truly classical and so well proportioned.

Imagine being a witness to the beaching of the ship - that must be truly heartbreaking.

She has served the world well - millions of guests and millions of miles.
