Sad as it might be, I received a mail from the dismantling yard 10 minutes ago after I sent them a mail at around 8 o'clock this morning, asking about the status of "Saga Rose". Here's their short answer:

The vessel has been dismantled already in October.

I also asked for pictures, but they didn't provide, so now I guess we can stop looking for traces of the great ship on Google Earth, the yards webpages or where ever...

    • That was fast.... what a pity that images of this dismantling are not made available, as a kind of closing to a long and successful career.

      • Maybe you all know, but in a discussion at Maritime Matters about the life expectancy of "Saga Ruby"..., one 'Patricia' answers a 'Corey' in the following way:

Corey, the current Captain told me on Wednesday they’re looking at 2015. Mind you, we know they can always change their minds!

Seems like I stumbled upon this beauty without being aware of it. I remember that I took a lot of pictures of some sort of cruise ship from the top of the Rockefeller Plaza when I was in New York back in the fall of 2009. After having looked through the photos I can now see that it was actually the Saga Ruby, Former Vistafjord I captured. The picture isn't of the best quality, as I didn't have the telephoto lens with me, and it was far away. You can see it sailing down the Hudson River. In the bottom right corner you can see the USS Intrepid.

The picture was obviously cropped a lot, so I had to resize it to 800x600 to get any sort of tolerable quality...

                Brilliant spot Eirik!

It pains my heart each time I see her, because I want her to last forever, but I also know she is soon too old, too expensive and too outdated.

We can all hope and pray that her current operators still see the value of her in service.

During my little peek around on shipspotting.com I found a few high quality shots of the old MS Sagafjord taken before those silly balcony cabins were added:

My goodness, she was such an achingly good looking ship, I'd say the Sagafjord, especially in that profile view shot, was the pinnacle of classic Scandinavian ocean liner/cruise ship design. It really pains me that I didn't get to see her before she was scrapped last year...

A picture of the ugly being added at Blohm & Voss Hamburg:

And a few shots I found of the MS Vistafjord while she was still in NAL:

                    Then later in Cunard colors...

Such a shame I didn't get to see her in her original glory...

Wonderful finds Eirik: I appreciated that walk down memory lane very much.

Such well designed and beautiful ships. I have vivid memories of these ships from the Norwegian fjords in my childhood. Together with the Royal Viking ships, they basically got me interested in cruise ships in the first place. All the way until another ship blew my mind: the SS Norway.

                          Jan-Olav,
Let's hope that the Saga Ruby finds a good home once she's retired from service for good. Hopefully, she won't be joining her sister to the scrapyard.

Thanks for showing us all these old pictures...., some of which I've certainly never seen!
Then, I honestly belived that Saga- and Vistafjord were sisters. Now I see they were totally different, at least from the hull up to top of funnel.
