This cruise will be more of a sensationalist and money-generating one than a memorial one IMHO. The centenary will bring much publicity to the liner, there surely won't be many relatives on board.

Battlefield visits are a popular event; some of these will be relatives, some because they are interested in history, some just wanting an entertaining day out.

It is extremely likely in a couple of years that there will be a major memorial event to mark the date, time, minute of the 9.11 atrocity. This WILL be memorial based as it is so recent in memory.

Therein lies the crux of the matter; the true significnce, sorrow, personal tragedy, weakens with time - when there are no longer people directly affected still alive. Consider visiting the site of The Battle of Hastings as opposed to The Normandy Beaches.

I suspect there certainly WILL be a sombre moment as the time of the collision arrives, but if they do the same in another 100 years, it might be less so - and possibly on board a reconstructed 'Titanic' then as well!

And I was just looking at the Norwegian Epic thread......

I mean, if history is repeating herself....would much rather have the Epic as the ship than the Balmoral..........

Southampton, the city are planning to have ready by 2012 the Sea City Museum at £15million cost. Maybe one to look out for, that's if Southampton can get it's act together. Southampton city leaders are not known for joined up thinking. Although another private venture is planned for a smaller Titanic exhibition.
I only hope that if it happens it will be done in a tasteful way.

Thought some members might enjoy the news that Captain Smith was found alive some years ago:

I saw a strange creature on the evening sky a few days back.
It was a huge sleigh with many reindeers in front, and in the sleigh, there was a big fellow in red clothing shouting HOHOHOHOHOOOOOO!!!!!
"IF GOD COULD MAKE ANGELS...., WHY IN HELL MAKE MAN?"

You met him???? Cool- I heard he was visiting one of the ice hotels.....

Going WAAAYYYY OT for a second...remember I lived in Memphis for 3 years before moving to Georgia....well, they refer to the second week in August as "Dead Week" because it is the anniversary of the King's death. There are so many visitors in town that many families go on vacation to avoid traffic. Huge amounts of activities all week. Everything from "The Flying Elvi"- a group of parachuting Elvis impersonators who parachuted over Downtown, landing on famous Beale Street to perform their routines, to a week-long mental health symposium , the theme of which--I kid you not-- was "Are You Lonesome Tonight- Elvis and the Disfunctional Family" ....

Glad you found Elvis...I will alert the Commercial Appeal newspaper in Memphis.... I now return this thread to it's initial theme "Titanic"......

I know many of us, me included, love the movie Titanic (of 1997)....

... but there are also a fair amount which do not enjoy this 3,5 hour long soap... so, for those, here is Titanic- the short version:

sniff....sniff.... that was so beautiful and moving, Captain.....

                              Thanks for sharing!

There have been two Titanic shows I've caught recently...on the Science Channel...only saw parts of them. One featured James Cameron, the movie's director, going back and steering one of the remote operated "thingies"--they were able to get to the Turkish Baths (on deck 4, I think) and they were almost perfectly preserved--even the lighting fixtures and some of the chairs/lounges. The tile was amazing--the colors still intense and hardly covered in sea life at all!

WAOW.... would love to see that. It's quite incredible if they made it so far down into the ship as the Turkish Baths... that's almost down in the lowermost passenger accessible parts of the belly of the ship.
