She's certainly spent more time in lay-up than active service - 17 years active service, 45 years sitting around not doing much.

It is strange looking through the flickr album that Jan-Olav linked to in his above post. All the empty spaces are named, telling us what used to occupy that area. So hard to imagine what was once there - all the luxury, all the people, all the romance. Ghosts of a bygone era. It would be nice to see those spaces recreated once more. (Hell, it would be even nicer to see her sail up Southampton Water again, but that is just a dream) But i do hope the ship does have a future, and i hope that future will recreate some of her past glory.

I find it mind-boggling that she has not returned to some kind of service - as a hotel, ship or a museum.

She is the ultimate American icon. American designed, American built, and carries the name of the nation.

I find it odd that no US President has seen the value of this ship in any way, nor any of the famous and richest people of the country.

Have you all seen this video on youtube?

The SS United States sits in decay on the waterfront in Philadelphia. America's flagship, and the world's fastest ship (winner of both Blue Ribands) needs all the support it can get to be saved. Please visit the SS United States Conservancy for more information on how you can help. "

Did you know that the GOOGLE EARTH PRO-version is now completely FREE for everybody to download?

Additionally, did you know that if you zoom in on the SS US all the way, you can now "walk her decks" through Google StreetView?

i'm also in facebook groups of the ss ''Norway'' and the ss ''United States''
and had had found aother image about the tow of the ss ''Norway'' and place them in the 2 groups.
a question of one member there if it was the same tug (''Smitwijs Rotterdam'') that towed the ss''Norway'' also towed the ss''United States'' to Piladelphia.
did a search on google and found out that the ''Smit New York '' did tat job.
and found an image of her,but the tug is far away to reconise,as which tug.but in differend stories they came with that tug name.

on her way back to America from Turkey

while surching further i just got another one of her with the tug.

looking for the info i read that the tug ''smit rotterdam'' towed her to Turkey,so that man was kinda right.
until another man said the lifeboats are stil on board.and i red that they where sold in Turkey.
so we see here (second image) the tug ''smit Rotterdam'' outbound for Turkey, while the first image the tug ''smit new york'' outbound for the USA

Hope so. She deserves a longer life with her remarkable history dating back to the 50s. The America was the poor sister and ended up on a reef on the way to Alang or Gadani.

My take on the recent development, as shared in the Crystal section:

Latest on the saga and ups & downs of the faith for this old lady: https://gcaptain.com/cruise-line-can...states-to-sea/

I'm afraid the possibilities of rehabilitating this one into anything is now fading for every year and every new proposal that fails.

I saw this news-story breaking yesterday too.... and though it is extremely sad, it is somewhat expected I guess.

It was quite an amazing news when Crystal announced they would look into how to revive this neglected vessel, and I was absolutely ecstatic about it. I thought at that time, if anyone could do it, it would be Crystal. But now, it seems that even they can't do it - and if they can't do it, then I find it highly unlikely that anyone else will try. From the news I have read online, Crystal spent nearly 1 million US$ on the feasibility study.

I think it is more than likely now, that the ship will finally be scrapped within the near future.
