And now, also the venerable United States is in the very high risk danger zone as well.

The time, even if someone has funds available, is maybe not the best of times as the world experiences recession and financial difficulties are a daily agenda on the news.

This is very bad news indeed, I think it will now take a very big miracle to save her. The very fact that she's been stripped of all toxic materials is only going make her disposal so much easier for star. What in law could prevent star from preparing her for tow at anytime soon? Raising the funds to buy her, let alone the costs of berthing her etc, are going to be very difficult in the present climate. Having said that, the present financial situation does offer a slight ray of hope, and thats simply the price of steel has fallen considerably, so star would not get anywhere near as much for her as they would have done a couple of years back.

If I were NCL/star, I think i would consider other options. If they want to repair some of the damage to their dented reputation I do not see why they could not simply donate (or sell for a dollar - just to keep the books straight) the SSUS to a group that would look after her. They would save themselves from even more bad publicity, plus they would be free from paying her berthing costs.

Im not sure what she would be worth in scrap at the moment, and just how much would it cost them to tow her halfway around the world?

would she even make it to the breakers? Is she still seaworthy enough after all those years of neglect? I really hope this beautiful ship won't go to alang.

sorry, but I think there is no real alternative than to scrap the ship
You should remind that the ship is since 40!!!years out of service and it is in a very bad condition (I read somewhere that there are leakages in the hull and that they have to pump out the water regularly to prevent a sinking)
And if I now think of the QE2 or the the MAXIM GORKIY two ships that are completely intact and in a very good condition and which will possibly be scrapped...
I just mean that it will be very very difficult to find an investor for the UNITED STATES this ship is like bottomless pit

But don't missunderstand me, of cause I hope that the ship will be saved...

          Best regards
          Eric

As much as I hate it, but I actually agree on that point: if two totally sound ships can't be saved, then an empty shell in neglect of active duty and with no engines, don't have a big chance.

I would love anyone prove me wrong, but I fear it all boils down to economics.

If she is not scrapped now, she will eventually have to go that way in the future. She has been laid up an awful amount of years, and probably haven't had any underwater work done for a VERY long time.

Last time she was in dry dock, was that in Turkey in the early 90's?

From discussions and new unconfirmed speculations across the net:

It looks like the ownership of SS United States has been transfered from NCL to Star. This may be a precursor to SSUS being scrapped.

With no engines? are you sure? I ever thought that the engines are still aboard the ship, or where they removed in Turkey?

I could be wrong but I was of the impression she had no engines on board. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I was just browsing through Google Earth to see if they would have to have any updated images of several vessels I have been trying to find/ track: and came across this one of the SS United States: I'm sure you have all seen her before:
