  • There is a distinct difference between the early Seismic vessels and modern day ones.
Here is one of the earliest purpose built Supply vessels from the Gulf of Mexico having been converted for shallow seismic:

The "Rio das Contas" operated in S.E.Asia from abt. 1970. She was stripped of seismic equipment later, but continued to exist at least until 2003, I have been told.

"Petrel" of Tromso was one was the first Norwegian seismic vessels operating in S.E.Asia, also from 1970:

I visited her in Balik Papan in 1971 and was duly impressed with their navigation system, which was accurate within a few meters, She run aground in broad daylight on an island in the east of Indonesia because the Mate trusted his instruments more than his eyes. (The island was charted 1 1/2 mile wrong)
She moved on after a few years.

A more modern seismic vessel, the "Geco Delta" was built at Liaaen in Aalesund as Factory trawler Longva III in 1973, but immediately converted for seismic service:

She also operated in S.E.Asia for a while, but that was much later.

Since the bay she was found in was named Terror Bay, I would have thought that would be the first place they would look for the wreck of "Terror".
It is obviously not a place frequently visited if nobody had noticed a mast(One?)sticking up above water until a few years ago.

    • I don't know when this one is built, but I'm sure it is a veteran built before 1970 as per the section heading:

I totally agree with you, Ralf... new and old in the same picture always lifts the level of the image higher. It's almost like a study of maritime evolution.

          • Ørnfløy for veteran-vessel aficionados... (is that the correct spelling?)...

            • N-26-BN is the M/V Faxsen of Bliksvær near Bodø. She was built back in 1916 and is being propelled by a 2-stroke one cylinder Wichman semi-diesel engine of 50 HP.

You know, all these wooden veterans, and more, will arrive in Kristiansund next summer to attend the Forbundet Kystens annual meeting and veteran boat festival.

                  • We have spoken several times in the past about this ship, and at one point when she was withdrawn from active sailing service, I was afraid that her days were numbered.

It now appears as if she is continuing service in the form of a hotel ship in Stockholm:
