SS Hestmanden - a Norwegian freighter star

At our old forum, we had a short thread about this old veteran ship called Hestmanden (link to thread at the old forum here).

A quick recap from the old forum:

I thought it would be in it's place making an own thread for this old and venerable vessel.... the HESTMANDEN.

Steamship HESTMANDEN sailed for more than 50 years in service and is an excellent piece of history of Norwegian merchant fleet. After enduring convoy-voyages through two world wars and a lifetime of service in coastal traffic, she has a special place int he hearts of many.

Read more about this vessel and see some pictures (site in Norwegian and French only)

If someone would be so kind as to update us all of her current status, with stories or images, it would be highly appreciated naturally.

As far as I can see from above links, she is currently in Bredalsholmen Dokk og Fartøyvernsenter at Kristiansand, Norway.

Thank you, captain, for giving Hestmanden a new life on this thread.

Almost as long as I remember, at least the last 20 years, "Hestmanden" have been docked at Bredalsholmen.

Almost every time I am out cruising with my little boat, I am passing Bredalsholmen and "the piece of scrap, Hestmanden".

"The piece of scrap" are not very nice words. But for most of all "ordenary" people in Kristiansand it is just what it is.

The work on this historical vessel goes VERY, VERY, VERY, VERY slow. And there has been a lot of conflickts about the restauration.

Working-conflicts and conflicts with the financial support and so on. And the main comment among most people in Kristiansand is that "Hestmanden" NEVER will be finished. And has become more of a problem than positive support.

Mostly because there has been so many conflicts, and that the work is going so extraordenary slow. "Hestmanden" has occupied the dry-dock for decades. Covered with ugly plastic. And most of the time they do nothing, because there are other veteran-vessels to work on. And so on........

But I hope some day during my lifetime, I will be able to see this historical vessel out floating WITHOUT plastic-cover.

    But I have my doubt......

I`ll try to take some pictures in a few days/weeks in my summerholiday.

An image of Hestmanden while she was still in service:

A rather unique photo, Hestmanden is the only Norwegian freighter that actually survived two world wars and still exists today.

The restoration of Hestmanden has come a far way:

            http://www.fvn.no/kultur/article858010.ece

Brand new wooden deck and almost completed.... can't wait to see her back in service again.

"Hestmanden" is finally out of dock in Kristiansand. And is now located just outside the new Theatre an Concert-house "Kilden".

"Hestmanden" will have an official baptising 22.november, and our King HM King Harald will be present.

Here is an image I shot from my boat in september. Just a few days before she was relesed from the dok at Bredalsholmen.

Great to hear that she FINALLY is coming to her prime soon: I remember her 30 years ago, neglected at a pier in Trondheim.

Re: SS Hestmanden - a Norwegian freighter star

1.-31.July it is possible to take a look at "HESTMANDEN" in the harbour of Kristiansand. Hestmanden is open as a museum-ship in July. But it is only possible to see the ship in guided groups. So I was not allowed to sneak around by myself to take pictures.

She is originally built for the VDS. But is restored in the color she was dressed in during the last world-war

The restoration is far from full-finished. The machinery is still missing some vital parts. And she has no propellar yet. So she is not able to sail by her own

Out on deck a new propellar has arrived. But this will only be an extra propellar.....

Re: SS Hestmanden - a Norwegian freighter star

                      From the navigation-bridge

                      View from the bridge

An intersting part from the bridge. A pipe for breath-, and sound-signals from the bridge down to the machinery

And here are some details from the steam-machinery. The big red wheel is the whel they opened up or redused the steam-presure to deside the speed of the ship.

Re: SS Hestmanden - a Norwegian freighter star

In the galley with the original oven

Captains office. The captains cabin was occupied by the leader of the museum-project. So I was not allowed to put my camera in there.

"Hestmanden" was a cargo-ship. But the idea to Mr Richard With was to have HURTIGRUTEN with passengership also carrying cargo. And also having Cargo-ships carrying passengers. "Hestmanden" sailed often the Hurtigruten-route. And the guide told me that she was the first cargo-ship sailing night and day. And "Hestmanden" had a passenger-capasity of 100 passenger.

But ONLY 2 cabins for 1st-class passengers. With total 6 beds

The rest of the passengers lived in a banjers and slept in hammocks and berths side by side......

From the cargo-deck. Unfortunately very dark. So it was difficult to take pictures during the guided minutes......

And in the bow on the cargo, was a small room where 15 sailors slept
