Re: RMS Queen Elizabeth 2 - the story continues.

I have searched all the normal sources of information, none are reporting anything about her being pulled apart or scrapped in Dubai, so lets hope that the report was wrong. I would have thought that even in a place like Dubai, something like that would be spotted and reported very quickly.

Mind you, she's been costing her new owners a fortune for the last few years, with absolutely no return, so i am not sure just how long such a situation can continue. Since 2008 she's been sitting there with generators and aircon running, main engines being run up on a regular basis, and a crew aboard. Plus harbour dues and continual maintenance. That's one hell of a big bill someone is getting.

For one thing, look at the date line for this article; Mar. 23, 2009, 3:10 PM. If they started scrapping her in 2009 she would have been gone by now.
The second thing is that Dubai is not a place to scrap ships. If she is going to be scrapped it would likely be in Alang.

According to the blog by our member Louis De Sousa work has commenced on her conversion, or at least the planning is advancing: http://www.qe2-the-legend.com

I cannot believe i missed that! The date is normally the first thing i check on anything like that.

Having looked at the link Louis De Sousa posted on qe2-the-legend, it's good to hear that some work is in hand and planning continues. All good signs for her future.

And without wanting to sound overly patriotic, this old girl does have one other thing going in her favour - her name! Maybe it's just wishful thinking, but i really cannot imagine the Queen Elizabeth 2 being hauled up onto a beach in India. That would cause a great deal of controversy, and it would not surprise me if Cunard did not have some agreement in the terms of sale that prevented her being dismantled in such a place. It would be very bad publicity for them if that were to happen, and the very name of the ship would also paint our Royal family in a bad light if she was to be hauled up the beach in a place like Alang.

Re: RMS Queen Elizabeth 2 - the story continues.

Good spot! Normally, I also check the date first... but this time I didn't.

Anyhow, I don't believe these rumors whether it is back then or right now.

But as mentioned above, the future of the ship is absolutely not in the "safe". She is costing a lot of money to have at idle, and it is only a question of time and how much money the owners want to spoon out for having her in that condition.

I hope the best, and so far, all official statements still say they are committed to keeping her.

I totally agree to that one, but she could simply be renamed to something short....

But, for all of the world, she still is the Queen Elizabeth 2, no matter what new name they give her.

I really wonder what is in store for this giant ocean liner... new static role or continued lay-up?

Rumors of Asian interest in the ship is being denied by the owners of the liner.
