    Our life giving sun

Take a look at this spectacular solar explosion which happened a few days ago: thankfully, AWAY from the earth!

    Spectacular!

What on earth would have happened if it had been on the side facing this planet???

I went to a lecture about this a week ago! Geomagnetic storms can affect the electricity power grid, disrupt radio communications at some frequencies and affect satellites, causing implications for non-terrestrial phone, TV, radio and internet links as well as GPS and navigation systems.

There would be increased auroral activity, extending to lower latitudes than normal.

Biological effects range from loss of homing pigeons navigational ability, to radiation and health risks to astronauts.

Yes, after posting above at #2 I was hunting around for a solution to Steve's puzzle on What Place.... and saw a site where some radio amateurs were bemoaning the loss of communication at that time.

It's quite scary when we think and know that the sun is now heading into a much more active period/ cycle of her life.

We would be arm-chopped if we lost our Internet, our electricity, our phones and our GPS... as humans we have become dependent on all these things and without them, only the remotest places on earth would have a less impact on daily life. I wonder, are we able to find the way to our local store or post office without a GPS?

Hmm... not sure if this is the right thread, BUT, the sun gives light....

Scientists may now have discovered that particles can reach speeds higher than speed of light.... (they might not have seen me yet, I guess).

These particles are not here, not today. We soon get washed away by rain....(==

Well, if this is proved (that things can move faster than the speed of light) then we can actually travel in time!

Imagine, we can go back to a sunny day!

Ooooo....., I might want to go back and buy my first digital camera on a much earlier stage. There are so many memories in shipping here in Kristiansund I would have wanted to picture.
As an example, just imagine all the launches of new ships Sterkoder yard did, without me having a single picture.
Well...., NOW we're OT, but in that field, I'm the King someone told me?

A lot of attention towards space lately, don't you all agree?

Scientists have now reports that they have found two GIANT black holes, each one bigger than our entire solar-system.... wonder what that means for us, and what is "BEHIND" that big black hole....

                        http://www.vg.no/nyheter/utenriks/ar...artid=10032156

Additionally, I read in the paper today that a planet that can sustain life has also been found... 600 light-years away.... Kepler 22-b is the name....

Wonder when Thai Airways will start flying there with direct non-stop flights from Oslo........

More importantly, could this be my new home-planet... one planet - one country, with me as a glorious RULER....

(I'm eagerly awaiting Lady E's response to this one.... )

                          Babe...why don't you start small...with an island...and work up to a planet.......

                          Just a suggestion.

Although it would make the statement "I'm King of the World" more appropriate, Jack..........

And, scientists have confirmed the existence of another planet within the "habitable zone" where liquid water may exist. There are about 20 suspected so far but they have finally "confirmed" one. They are probably looking back at us saying they have just confirmed the existence of a planet 1/3 the size of theirs in the habitable zone.

At least it was there 600 years ago. If the inhabitants are anything like the humans they may have destroyed it by now.

By the way, if any body is there and is looking back at us right NOW, they would see the earth as it was 600 years ago. That would make it in the Dark ages, wouldn't it??
