S|S Norway : Images from Charlotte Amalie

Presenting to you, the honorable members of CaptainsVoyage Forum, this shot from the time back in 1996 when I rented my own helicopter for an hour to take pictures of the grandest ship of them all, the ship that is no longer a part of the weekly group coming to Saint Thomas: S|S Norway

With best regards from Jan-Olav Storli

That is a lovely image Captain. Those helicopter rentals where a big investment, for you and us.

I'm really glad I did them back then: colleagues were ferociously talking about me and thinking I was completely mad, spending half of my salary on renting them: but, I'm glad I did. The helicopter charters were actually a bit cheaper than the tug boat in Miami!

These are really important images to me. Especially now, more than ever before.

A lovely photo Jan-Olav. You really get a true sense of her size, plus i love seeing her original stern peeking out from under her newer aft deck. This photo really shows off her original sleek design.

Two times in Saint Thomas, in 1994 and then again in 1996. And also a tug in Miami - just to get some special shots of the ship.

You are so very correct... it cost me near 1200 dollars each of the two times to rent a helicopter, with films and development including. The tug boat rental in Miami was also a huge expense, because I had ordered it for her departure at 1600 hours, and she was 30 minutes late leaving. I had to pay for the delay naturally.

I'm really glad I did it anyway.... I remember how people laughed at me, saying I was way too crazy doing it... but deep inside me, I knew that one day, it would all be worth it.

I love the images I shot back then... they make really great posters for the wall.

Fantastic images of her Jan....I love everyone of them. Thank you for posting them, so we can enjoy them as much as you did.
sigpicI will never forget the lovely grand SS NORWAY.
                          Past Cruises on her: August 22, 1992. June 4, 1994, April 7, 2002.
Nearly had our fourth cruise, it was set for November 7, 2003...
the boiler room disaster of May 4, 2003 took her out of service.
We ended up on the NORWEGIAN WIND, not the same as the SS NORWAY
