    Design team for the Excelsior

RVL had been taken over by Kloster Cruise and finally the decision was being made - a new ship to be added to the RVL fleet. Who's to built - lots of discussions with a number of shipyards - in Finland, Germany, France and Italy.
Had the pleasure of being a member of the original design team for the
Excelsior as the prosject being called at the time. Did you know that the
Royal Viking Sea should have been named "Sun" originally, but this was changed at the very last minute. Thus available for the new vessel at the time.
Did work for Royal Viking Line both in Oslo as well as San Francisco from
1972 untill Kloster moved everything to Miami in 1987.

A warm welcome on board Steinar and thanks for that story....

You may have a lot of information to add to this story of the old board then:

Royal Viking Nova - The New Ship Never Built

I will make a new thread here on this board where we can continue talking about the NOVA/ Excelsior.

The new NOVA/ Excelsior thread is located here: http://www.captainsvoyage-forum.com/...=2884#post2884

        From the very beginning

        Thanks Jan-Olav,

can we take it from the very beginning wirh Royal Viking Line?
The Excelsior/Royal Viking Sun story comes very much later.

Looking through old files one tends to find things, do'nt know why one has kept things, especially sinde I left RVL for mor than 20 years ago and has moved a few times since then.

But you are right, when it comes to Royal Viking Line I can add or correct
        to the story.

I happend to find a copy of an internal magazine of Bergenske Dampskibsselskab, issued in March 1972, with the whole story on the Royal Viking Star. Will provide this as we go along and also try to scan it in so that it will be available for all to see.

To my amazement I also found two VHS - films from RVL-

one on the Alaska cruises - apparently some 11 minutes long
and one on the British Isles Cruises - also apparently some 11 minutes long
Both on PAL system and from 1986. Anyone out there interested?

But there is more - did also find a "Norway" VHS - film - apparently a
Norman Tour film promoting cruise with the SS Norway-

        Even more is coming!

        Have a nice evening.

This was the very first cruise ship I visited and had lunch aboard back in 1996. She made a visit to NY and the Steamship Historical Society L.I. Chapter planned a visit and luncheon- I have the menu somewhere. Thanks to my friend Tom for that opportunity. I did not have a camera with me at the time and am hoping that the gentleman that did take photos, with me on the bridge no less can share.

I do have this lovely shot of what has to be one of the better looking modern cruise ships today.

Today of course, she sails under the HAL flag as Prinsendam looking sharp with the dark blue hull.

I totally agree 120% - the Royal Viking Sun has a modern and a very beautiful profile, even today, almost 21 years since she was launched.

She is a clear testament to the statement that elegance is timeless.

An older image of the Royal Viking Sun from one of their brochures. If I'm not way off the charts, I'm pretty convinced this image was taken in Venice, Italy on the way out to sea and before passing the 'junction' outside Saint Marcus Square:

Has anyone sailed onboard Prinsendam recently? Has her interiors changed much since 2002 or 2005, what major refits has she undergone since 1996? What public rooms have changed names, configurations since 2002?

The Royal Viking Sun is a well proportioned cruise ship, well designed and timeless beauty. She looks stunning till this day, as a testament to her great design!

Admiral pakarang you are correct, as always! That photo you posted was also blown up on a RVL marketing poster that my Travel Agent gave to me. I sailed on all the RV ships except the Queen (but have sailed many times on the Seabourn Legend) as a passenger. The RV Sun still remains my favorite cruise ship. I wish I could reciprocate but my only pictures of the RV ships are slides and when scanned, even at high resolution, the resulting photos are not of good quality.

                    Captain RJ — great photos!!

I guess this belongs under this Royal Viking Sun-thread: in my collection, amongst many Royal Viking items, I also have the Royal Viking Sun building book.... it's a hard cover book with lots of advertisements, some construction photos and the story behind the ship. It comes encased in a sold box as well.

The book: Ever Higher : The Birth of the Royal Viking Sun.

I never knew what the cover looked like or the title of the builders book. Thanks Capt.

Did you ever get my PM I sent?

Thanks for the comment... from what I can remember, I got the book as a birthday gift whilst I was serving on board in the first years the ship operated. If my memory also serves me right, I think it was a gift from the Front Office Manager. I do recall, there were many of them on board in the beginning.

PM? I'll need to check... Might be one that I have forgotten to reply to...

I may have an extra copy that is not "Autographed". As the SFO office was closing many of us used this book as an autograph book. All of us signed our photos in the book...

You boys are making me do some garage cleaning!!!!

Might be interested in one of those as they are very hard to come by.
I sent you a PM a while ago Capt. in regards to the STELLA SOLARIS.
