ex Håkon Jarl ::: CHRISTIAN V / HÅKON JARL :::

Just realized we do not have a thread for this old fine vessel, which by the way, is still alive today: even though she has been .... ehh... misused (I was going to insert another word here, starting with RA...., but I better not).

On the old forum, we had the decency to include her

This is really off-topic but maybe other CV members will be as amused as I was to read the opening paragraph of this page about Håkon Wium Lie (who is responsible for specifying CSS - a very important element of web technology)

        http://people.opera.com/howcome/

He says that "In English, my first name is unpronounceable" and goes by the name howcome, which is "the closest pronounceable approximation" [to English speakers].

As I said, this is off-topic but maybe my pronunciation of Håkon Jarl is now nearer to being correct - well, assuming my Jarl is any good.

Names are not easy, my friend

That post above was funny. As you know I am a norwegian. And do not think very much the meaning of names pronunciation in other languages..........

Until last winter. I wanted to teach an englishman how to go skiing, and to like cross-contry-skiing. He thought that kind of sport was rather stupid

I have several skies from the norwegian ski-producer named "MADSHUS". My english friend borrowed one pair, and all of the sudden started to laugh......

He thought "MAD HOUSE" was a very suitable name for the equipment to such a stupid sport

(But now we are veeeery far out of line here. Please bring us back to Haakon Earl (Jarl) )

From these images in that facebook profile page. it appears as if most of the hotel staff were from Sweden and Denmark. Was the company running the hotel not Norwegian, or were there no Norwegians who wanted to work on board?

Anyone going to Antwerp this summer?

Would love to see a fresh picture report from the ship... she remains in my mind, and even though she is now literally destroyed, I would very much like to see the latest.

                              Dear all readers,

It appears as the Diamond Princess (former Håkon Jarl) hotel is now closed for an undetermined period because of refurbishment. I found the message on their website when trying to see if they were still open for business: http://www.diamondprincess.be/

There are some fine images from inside the ship in their website, but on the outside, she looks .... ehemm... different from her hurtigruten years.

Here are a gallery with some more images: http://public.fotki.com/Magwa/ships/...and/hakonjarl/

I would really like to visit her and stay on her some day in the future, experience whatever is left of the old hurtigrute. When, and if they ever open again, I hope I can get this chance.

Does anyone have any images of the rooms (cabins) and in particular, the suite on the former ships navigation bridge?
