    Re: ::: Vesterålen :::

    Vesterålen is a ship I’m much overdue to travel aboard again, as I’ve found myself becoming almost nostalgic for her mid-generation quirkiness! So what a treat, right from the moment I saw your first photos with all those passengers around her decks at Risøyhamn, and on to a sunny Stokmarknes.

    Always good to see photos from the Trollfjord, and it looks as if there have been changes on the deck since my last time aboard as I don’t remember that glassed in area or indeed the outdoor picnic-style benches.

    How fortunate you were to see the Lofoten wall in such light, and in rather a different way I think it must have been wonderful to see those windmill parts on the quay at Rørvik!

    It is indeed an old sundbåt you photographed at Kristiansund. Here are a couple of posts with info about from our Kristiansund member Svein (who takes his nick name Sterkoder from the shipyard in your next photo of course!) :

    I liked the colour and mood of the photo in Hustadvika, and then got all excited about the unusual view from Vesterålen looking down at Lofoten!

    I laughed when I read what you had written about the illogical deck arrangement and especially the rear cabin section. Although actually on the then Midnatsol ll, later Lyngen, where the arrangement was similar, I was wandering all over the place for absolutely ages trying to find my allocated cabin! Following the signs with directions and groups of cabin numbers I got back to where I’d started from at least twice, and eventually had to return to reception and admit defeat! The cabin turned out to be one of the two with windows facing aft, like the ones you can see on Vesterålen in your photo #248/6. I think these cabins were more difficult to find on the old Midnatsol because one hesitated to walk in front of where they had a TV screen when people were watching, thus missing the door to the stairs and corridor which was the best route to the cabins!

    Thanks for giving me so much pleasure and memories HurtigruteHelga.

      Major whoopsie: Arriving in Bergen today, Vesterålen crashed into the quay, smashing the gangway:

      Fortunately there are no personal injuries, only material... According to VG, the cause was a momentary blackout, and subsequent loss of propulsion...

        So that's one bent. One broken (Richard With). One in Oslo (Midnatsol). One in dry dock (Nordkapp from tomorrow). It's going well!

          I am VERY tempted to post out THIS one here........... even if it is not a nice thing to do when it is NOT going so well........

          By the way........I have NEVER understood WHY they had to waste money to build that gangway in Bergen. All ships own gangway-entrance is used in every other harbour. So why passengers have to enter the ships on a total wrong deck in Bergen, is impossible for me to understand.

          I am actually more concerned about the REASON to this accident. Engine-blackout and loosing propulsion at docking. is NOT what I am comfortable with.............

          But the VERITAS had an inspection this evening, and cleared the ship. So Vesterålen is sailing again. She will cancell Florø. Måløy and Torvik. And go directly to Ålesund, to get a "cosmetic rapair".

                    Happy birthday M/S Vesterålen! These Hurtigrute ships that arrived in the 1980s must have been a big transition from the old ships from the 1960s. I am very happy that Hurtigruten still have M/S Vesterålen, but surely not long until she also is replaced with a new ship.

                      Hello all,
                      I have a question about inside cabins in this ship and am looking for advice on which ones to choose (which part of the ship). I don't have any plans for a trip yet, but just in cas an opportunity arises, I prefer to be ready ...
                      I am looking for a quiet cabin. (once I traveled on board Kong Harald with a cabin at the back at reception level and it was not good at all). I don't want to repeat that...
                      On MS Vesteralen, inside cabins at the front are on lower decks and those at the back on upper decks. (I always heard it was better to be up front on upper decks but it is not possible here ...)
                      Which ones are best concerning noise ?
                      Of course easy access to the outside is also important, that's why I'm tempted by Deck D or E inside cabins.
                      Thanks for any info on this.

                        Stay clear of cabins near her funnel (starboard side) if You want to sleep at nights. My experience is that cabins on Deck 2/3 in the middle of the ship are silent.

                          Thanks for your feedback Sigve,
                          I'll avoid starboard side cabins near the funnel then.
                          What do you mean by deck 2/3 ? On the Hurtigrtuen web site (the french one at least) they use letters for them ..) Do you mean deck B/C ? (B being the level of the car deck)

                            Re: ::: Vesterålen :::

                            I would guess deck 2 is deck B (cabins 2xx) and deck 3 is deck C (cabins 3xx). My only experience with Vesteraalen is in a cabin on deck 2/B (215 I think) and I don't remember it to be particularly noisy (I stayed only two nights). However, access to the outside is not great (but quick access to the panorama lounge by the lift! ). For best outside access, I think the cabins on deck 4/D and 5/E are better situated (but then there is the funnel noise problem?).
                            Tricky... But I found Vesteraalen to be a tricky ship, which makes her particular charm!

                              Thanks Sarnia for your feedback on this too.

                              Deck B could be a good place then (happy to know the car deck does not produce special noise).

                              Otherwise, upper decks, but not on the side of the funnel (which would be 417-403 or 523-507 cabins) could be considered then...

                              Tricky as you said, but tempting ...

                                Yes, I mean deck B and C, and midships. I once spent a night close to her active funnel, and that was not a pleasant night at all. But her panorama salon is very pleasant!
