GraemeD, these are terrible news, If ever possible i would change my plans and accept their offer to book a new trip on her. The main reason for me to book a round trip again would be the ship!
Maybe your boss can accept a cancellation of your holidays - or there is another good idea to spend the time. Very disappointing!

      Hei All,

First post for ages, though I've been viewing fairly often ( & seen Tommi's posts from last March, inc. photos of me, when we met on Midnatsol & Lofoten - and the great video, atmospheric or what! :-) ) - I promise I will work out how to post photos and post some of Tommi on same trip.

So, touch of deja vu for me from last year - with delays for Lofoten after maintenance period (which led to me transferring to Midnatsol then). This one seems much more serious - assume there must need to be some pretty major engine/hull work needing doing to cause an additional 10+ days work to be identified in addition to planned 22 days.

And I'm booked on voyage commencing 13/03 (to take trip planned last year!) and booked well away from maintenance period. Now only 1 return trip between current planned return to service & me boarding - here's hoping (& for Eilun as well as myself).

I've also noticed a lot of minor changes in Hurtigruten timetable in past few months (in addition to the seasonal ones to allow for additional Spring-summer & autumn fjord visits). Arrival at Kirkenes now 0900 rather than 0945 with corresponding changes back to Honningsvag. On Sbound longer stay at Svolvaer & Bronnuysund with changes to timings between. The times are (now) reflected on Hurti websites including the bypass of Mehamn N & S.

The Mehamn situation sounds a little worrying, why haven't Hurtigruten offered to do boat transfer within harbour, if it's good enough for excursion passengers in Gerainger (& used to be(?) for excursion passengers near Ornes for Svartisen excursion) why not for Mehamn? From a personal perspective the loss of the 2 snowmobile excursions between Mehamn & Kjollefjord is really disappointing - I've done the Nbound one twice (once with 3 others from Lofoten, once with 30 others from Midnatsol) & reckon it's one of best of Hurtigruten excursions. On both my visits we could see Northern Lights whilst skidooing, somewhat of a "road safety" hazard! :-) On a more serious note it's also the livelihood of some folks from Nordkyn lost or threatened - I hope Hurtigruten use some imagination in order to re-introduce the full service asap.

Be very pleased to hear from other members (hoping to be) on same voyage as myself, or who may be near ports of call during the voyage.

      Fair Winds & Weather,

      Richard

Well, Hurtigruten have been fantastic in this situation. They offered me 2 choices: a. Kong Harald the day before my planned trip; b. a full refund (flights/hotels included) with 20% off a later booking. I didn't want either and they accommodated my wishes without question - I will be on MS Trollfjord Trondheim-Kirkenes-Bergen-Trondheim, so I actually get 2 extra nights full board for nothing. If I didn't do this, I was stuck with my two week vacation from work anyway. I will book MS Lofoten again later in the year/this time next year. But a big thumbs up to Hurtigruten Customer Service, I cannot praise them enough.

So glad to hear your vacation has been "saved" Graeme. A modern ship, but a big favourite of mine
Was your booking and helpful customer service direct or with the London office?

Sorry you can't sail aboard Lofoten,GraemeD but Trollfjord is a nice ship too with a cool atmosphere....And the landscape is the same anyway.I am sure you'll enjoy your trip.

If Lofoten isn't able to do the anniversary cruise, I will cancel everything. I don't have enough money to repeat the cruise often and I booked it because of the nice ship.
My experience with Hurtigruten in January 2008 wasn't positive. MS Lofoten stayed in Tromsø, because of some repairs at the machine. They tried to cancel the cruise one day for departure. I couldn't change my holidays and the travel agency promised a discount as I decided to stay in Tromsø for some days. I never heard something about it and nobody answered to my mail. The travel agency Kystopplevelser is gone and I think it is better now. But this was a reason to avoid Hurtigruten for some years.
This time I will do the whole cruise on Lofoten or nothing. But there is hope. It is possible booking cabins departure 2. March, if you choose one Person.
I don't like the last day on board and I planned leaving in Trondheim, but it was impossible to find a flight for an appreciable sum there. I will return to Bergen and can wave goodbye to Richard.

What I have done now twice (and will probably do again next time) is leave the plane in Trondheim and take the train to Oslo. With NSB's minipris it can be really cheap to take the train (from 249NOK) and much easier to have a flight from Oslo. Of course the train ride takes some time (6 hours) but it goes through very beautiful landscape and the train is comfortable.

I hope you'll be able to do the cruise as planned, it would be a shame if that particular trip was cancelled as well. Graeme D, glad you could find a solution with Hurtigruten and I'm sure you will still enjoy your holiday. I also have very positive experience with Hurtigruten customer service.

Sorry we are not in the same trip. Same for me, my first time at this period, and just as you I enjoy the winter trips very much. I took a later date in the hope of seeing the Northern lights as well...

Nothing too scary, actually. According to discussion in the German-language Hurtigforum, the reason for the delay is the quite major work needed in the cabins affected by the "stinking fish water" incident. So, no engine or hull problems, it seems.

It is no problem booking a cheap flight from Trondheim, if I will start and land there.
It is only expensive when I try to combine different airports. But the train ride from Trondheim to Oslo is something I missed and I would like to do.
I think GrameD's idea sailing back to Tronheim is a good choice. In 2007 I sailed Tromsø-Kirkenes-Bergen-Trondheim. I enjoyed the distance to Bergen much more without the needs packing my bags and leaving the cabin early.
The Norwegian post office believes Lofoten will sail:

I had always found this myself but, when checking flights for this year, found good prices from SAS (I am flying BHX-CPH-BGO the TRD-CPH-BHX on return (original return was TRD-ARN-BHX but SAS rescheduled and broke connection)). This was cheaper than my previous "go to" option (BHX-AMS-BGO return with KLM).

Hope you find better deal - unless you take Sarnia's advice & get train :-).

Shall I go to Bergen or it is better looking for a flight to Ålesund?

It's a great experience to depart from Bergen in the evening and pass Askøybrua, Sotra etc. And then rise in Florø (0430 in the morning) and stay on deck through Frøysjøen towards Bremangerlandet, Skatestraumen and Måløy. And then there is Stad! Vanylvsgapet and Herøystraumen towards Torvik. This part of the voyage is very exciting! I wouldn't miss it!

Assuming your question is about whether Lofoten will be back in service in time for scheduled departure on 2nd - all I can offer is that Marine Traffic shows her still stationary in Fiskarstrand & webcam still looks as if she's there too (similar shot to a few days ago). Still time to get to Bergen though.. If I spot her en passage I'll repost.

They have had to rebuild the cabins damaged by the leak a few months ago as the walls were infiltrated by the smell of fish. It is taking a lot longer than expected as they uncover more damage :-(.

Good news Lofoten is alongside Bergen and flying the flag of her new home port Tromso on the staff.
