There seems to be a technical problem with "Lofoten" today - a distinct lack of crane!
Just around 13:30 UK time, I spotted this while having a cup of tea after lunch.

Earlier, while waiting for her visit to Geiranger, she seemed to be off route and alongside at a location I didn't recognise
Currently, 14:00 UK, she is berthed in Alesund.

Do any off the experts know what the problem is?
And, how will it effect her service status?

Maybe they have replaced the crane with a new top-secret ballistic rocket?

Well, expert and expert, that would be up to others to decide, but "Lofoten"s crane rest at the docks of Fiskarstrand Verft due to problems with rust/corrotion.
Maybe it was the yards dock you saw her moored to earlier, the place you did not recognize...?
What this means for the round trip I don't know, but obviously she would be unable to handle cargo, or...?

It must have been as, from the forward looking webcam, you could see a very large length of chain dangling from a dockside crane over the bows. I just assumed that there was an extra heavy piece of cargo to offload.
The side view (starboard, I think on Lofoten) showed a couple of guys looking on with interest!
Before she left Alesund there did seem to be quite a bit of cargo on the dockside.

"Lofoten" heading north this evening without her crane as mentioned above in earlier posting.
Autumn darkness comes earlier each day now...

Fine shot, Bengt. I like the blurry houses, which make the speed visible. I wish i could be the person on the bridge wing...

Hopefully, the problem can be solved in a satisfactory manner without too much of an extra cost and loss of time.

Her machinery items survey is due soon, would the crane be included in this?

We were passengers Bergen-Kirkenes-Bergen on this trip - the ship missed out the trip up Geirangerfjord and went direct to Alesund, where most of passengers disembarked for alternative coach trip to Geiranger. MS Lofoten went to Fiskestrand, where the crane was unshipped and taken ashore - I have photos/video of this happening if anyone's interested. We then went back to Alesund just after midday, after which the excursion party returned and the ship was able to return to her schedule that evening. We stayed craneless for the rest of the round trip, but the schedule was not further affected. Cargo, so far as I could tell, was loaded/offloaded by shore cranes, but whether the amount carried was affected I couldn't say. By the way, this was our first trip on the Hurtigruten, We chose MS Lofoten because of her classic status, and had an absolutely wonderful experience in every way - saving up to do it again.

According to the duty officer at the gangway Tuesday in Ålesund (northbound), they will pick up the crane on the next roundtrip.
