I like this one, the passage-like space between ship and the autumn-leaves-coloured container, which, as you have already seen, was full of fishing nets.

Nordstjernen in Svolvær –a different view and very favourite image.

I walked around to look back at the ship, and found this was where the boats for the Sea Eagle Safari would later depart from. The view out towards the harbour entrance from the foreground pile of rocks just to the left of where I’m standing is nostalgically familiar. It was the view from a webcam that used to look out from the nearby offices of Lofotposten. I must have spent hours if not days looking virtually at that view, and quite a lot of actual minutes standing perched on those rocks, to be recorded as a little pin-man against the water. I have kept images of every hurtigrute arriving and departing in every season and every time of day and even made some speeded up time lapse versions of comings and goings of fishing boats, and that fabled Lofoten light as weather continually changed and clouds flitted across the sky. In so many places webcams have improved and proliferated during the last decade, but the current offering from Svolvær, looking to the mountains across the inner harbour, is for me no match at all for what used to be.

I had opportunity, before the meeting time for the excursion back at the ship, to continue to the town centre where I took photos more appropriate for other than Nordstjernen’s own thread. But perhaps I may be allowed just a few photos of the excursion itself here, seeing that it was specific to this last cruise of the ship.

Ok, I don’t want to raise expectations, and had better admit immediately that I have no photo of a Sea Eagle for you… but I did see a Sea Eagle!
First we have to dress, and take our places aboard these sturdy craft, and receive essential briefing.

Then, an unrivalled photo opportunity as we set off.

Having flown from the airport earlier this year, while chasing Nordstjernen on her last regular southbound voyage, it was a pleasure to see the airport from the sea and from sea-level.

Dressed in bulky cover-alls, perched astride a hobby-horse-like seat, and with one hand to the rail, photography, at least with a non-compact camera, is no easy feat, but I must delight in showing you at least a few successes here (and they indeed encouraged me to attempt more photography from moving buses on the subsequent days’ excursions than I might otherwise have done). The Sea Eagle escaped my camera by cunningly swooping directly overhead and behind me, and to make a rapid one hundred and eighty degree swivel while remaining in the boat and operating a camera simply isn’t possible. But the sight of that bird, in a moment of time that I just described as rapid, yet which I remember as stunningly time-stopping, almost slow motion, will remain with me as a special memory.

I ought at least to show you some birds here!

The route brought us back past the island of Skrova…

… before the two boats sped past each other in a thrilling chase in which James Bond himself would not have been disappointed…

So we were returned to our starting point, with another unique view of Nordstjernen.

Back on board I was soon out on the aft deck, having followed my nose in the direction of the tantalising tempting smell of waffles cooking.

There was the time to watch the arrival of the regular hurtigrute, Nordnorge.

A special view, and a view of the bridge.

So, after our departure from Svolvær, and another entertainingly disrupted dinner, this amazing day continued to delight in a meeting of three ships, Nordstjernen with Nordnorge and Trollfjord.

There is something about the arrangement of the aft lounge and that feeling of continuity with the outside that I have always loved about this ship.

I stand on deck, a moment of calm contentment, the evening light fading on the Vestfjord,

So much cool stuff, but I loved the Trollfjord in a different light most.

A big wow! So many of these pictures are so unique, because you have experienced the situation before. Therefore you must not stay like all the others in the front or back like everyone does at first sight. You are going some step beside and that creates these special views i love so much! I can't tell you how much i am enjoying this thread! Thank you!!!

Those insightful comments from you two on the last instalment mean a lot to me (and significantly it’s the two of you who have experienced first hand what I’m like on a ship in these waters!).
You’ll find that the next day is an interesting variation on the subject of familiarity and unfamiliarity…)

Meanwhile, here is the GPS track of the Sea Eagle Safari excursion.
