        Ohhhh..........

It is hard to believe that it is as much as 18 years since she retired (first time).

I still remember very clear that I was out at the fort Nyholmen Skandse in Bodø to take "goodbye-pictures" of her when she left Bodø, just a few days before this video was shot. I had tears in my eyes, because I was sad to loose such a beatiful lady, just one year after ex-Polarlys was replaced.

My goodbye-picture shooting at "Thank you for everything" was repeted in 1996, when she was replaced by new Polarlys.

And it was also repeted May 2002 when she was replaced by Trollfjord.

I also remember I thought I had my very best birthday december 2002 when she sailed one roundtrip in Nordlys`route. Coinsidently she was in Bodø on my birthday, so I was able to take a short trip with her. My VERY LAST, I thought)

So even if I am sad that an era seems to be gone for good this time, I am VERY greatful for all these "BONUS-YEARS" and BONUS-TRIPS" with her the last 18 years.

Every trips and voyages with her, was like visiting a caring grandmother.

The second last time we saw Nordstjernen in Stamsund tonight..
Great weather, lots of people, and a little daylight that made the photos more blue than black (finally)

Beautiful picture Carina! I hope they will have all flags out when she is southbound, It would look really good if they do. I'll be on the dock in Harstad when she is southbound for the last time, but I wont be able to make the trip to Sortland that I was hoping I could do.

I just want to put my letters under The Sea Otter`s statement too. Beautiful picture, Carina.

And you catched the typical "Nordstjernen-mooring". I guess you will be aboard when she is southbound????

Unfortunately I was not able to see her in Bodø this afternoon. I only got a vague sight of her far out at Landegode. I`ll try to stay up all night when she is soutbound in and out of Bodø.

Is this a "propeller walk" manoeuvre?

I would think this is more of a "spring walk". He has probably dropped Stbd. anchor and is now moving dead slow ahead, with rudder hard astarboard.
That will bring the stern in towards the wharf, but at the same time controlled easing out of the anchor will bring the bow into contact with the wharf.
Once the bow is firmly on the fenders the rudder angle will decide how fast the stern turn in or, if the wind or current is from Stbd. side, turning the rudder to Port can reduce the speed at which she hits the wharf.

Classical manaeuvre for single screwed ships with fixed pitch propeller and reversible engine. (NX has Variable Pitch Propeller, which makes this operation easier, but doesn't change the procedure)

With the old Gulf of Mexico type Supply Boats the "propeller walk" was used to "walk the boat". They were flat bottomed and twin screwed, with the propellers turning in opposite directions. By putting one engine ahead, the other astern and the rudders hard over, the boat would move sideways when coming alongside an anchored barge or drillship. The distance between the brest anchor wires/chains were sometime not much more than the length of the boat, so it took some skill to do this.

Absolutely fabulous photo Carina! It immediately made me glad I’ll see her soon because if I hadn’t planned to do so, I’d just HAVE to after seeing this!

Sorry you can’t make it to Sortland, Sea Otter, but perhaps you’ll be able to take the view of her as she leaves Harstad which we aboard will only see in reverse! Makes more CVF “total coverage” in a way

                          Aha, spring walk.

I hadn't considered the anchor; two questions arise.
                          • Would the captain delegate bow position to an anchor-man and concentrate on bringing the stern in; or would the captain actively involve himself in both stern and bow?
                          • What's keeping the bow line tight as we see in Carina's photo?

I would love to see a Gulf of Mexico boat doing that walking manoeuvre.

Bad news: the Nordstjernen is still in Stokmarknes with technical problems at the generator. Estimated departure shall be at clock 20:00 which would mean a delay of 19 hours.

Aha, so thats why she is still here...
I wonder if this means that the southbound ship will cancel Stokmarknes today then.
