      Carina,

With your permission, I will tidy up the English, post it here for a consensus opinion that it correctly reflects your original text in Norwegian, then maybe you or I could offer it to the auctioneers.

I would like to be involved, in a small way, with the future well being of Nordstjernen but understand if you think this a bad idea.

Of course! You would do that? I considered myself for a few seconds to offer them a better translation of the text, because it looks and sounds awful at the moment, but I'm not motivated at all to work on that now, so if you'd like, that would just make me happy.

Funny! It was the ONLY page on my website I didn't translate when I translated the rest of the website, and now it was the page that needed a translation the most :P

              Re: ::: Nordstjernen :::

Strangely, the name "Nordstjernen" disappeared from the auctioneer's page. I'm pretty sure that the page originally said "Nordstjernen", now it has "Coastal steamer" as title. The funny thing is, however, that the name is retained in the translation as "North Star" ;-)

Here it is (excluding the specification sections at top and bottom) after a serious tidy up into good English based on Google Translate's auto-translation.

I am confident of most of it; the few words/sentences I am uncertain of are [enclosed in square brackets].

For approval/comment by the CV community:
MS Nordstjernen is the oldest Hurtigruten ship still running and, at the age of 55 years, is a piece of living Hurtigruten history. She was built by Blohm & Voss of Hamburg Germany after the old Nordstjernen (1937) ran aground and sank in the Raftsund in late Summer 1954, and was delivered to the Bergenske Dampskipsselskap (Bergen Steamship Company, BDS) on 24 February 1956. At 2191 Gross Tonnes and a length of 80.7 metres, she was much like the other coastal vessels of that era, but her internal decor set her apart.

At that time, ships were arranged with First Class and Second Class accommodation, unlike the Hurtigruten ships of today. First class was amidships with 62 cabins while 2nd class was abaft with 130 cabins. A single Cafeteria served both classes. Main propulsion consisted of a 6-cylinder Burmeister & Wain of 3000 hp [diesel], which achieved 16.5 knots in sea trials. Nordstjernen was the only ship of the BDS fleet put into service with an international clientèle in mind. Many cruises that departed from the regular coastal route were organised, for example to the Shetland Islands and Svalbard, and more recently to Germany and Denmark.

In January 1979 BDS sold its interests in Hurtigruten, and its four ships, to the Troms Fylkes Dampskipsselskap (Troms County Steamship Company, TFDS) and with new funnel livery Nordstjernen became her new owners' flagship. Four years later in 1982-83, Nordstjernen underwent a major refit with a new 8-cylinder MaK engine of 3600 hp replacing the old unit. Most of the accommodation was rearranged and refurnished, many new cabins now having their own integral bathroom though at the cost of a reduction in the total number of berths. In March 1983 she went back into the Norwegian coastal service, where she remained until replaced MS Nordlys in the Spring of 1994. At this time, Nordstjernen was taken out of the regular coastal route but was retained by the company for special duties, for example Summer cruises to Svalbard.

Since 1994, Nordstjernen has acted several times as a replacement for other Hurtigruten ships but in recent years was more permanently employed in her former role on the coastal route. [After completing one last round-trip as a Hurtigrutgen ship, she will be taken out of service on 22 March 2012].

                Milestones in MS Nordstjernen's career:

Autumn 1954 - Contract placed on German shipyard.
24 February 1956 - Delivered as "Nordstjernen" to BDS and put into service.

From 1994 onwards - Cruise to Svalbard every Summer until 2008.
9 September 1995 - Returned to the regular route after the sale of Ragnvald Jarl.
17 April 1996 - Out of the regular route after delivery of MS Polarlys.
February 1997 - Hired as a hotel ship in Trondheim.
June 1999 - Hired for a concert tour from Kirkenes to Svolvaer.
Winter 1999/2000 - Upgraded for 10 million Norwegian Kroner.

September 2001 - Hired for cruises between Sandnessjøen and Ålesund.
3 November 2001 - Sailed the route for MS Harald Jarl.
May 2002 - Out of the route after delivery of MS Trollfjord.
November 2002 - [Deputy of the Nordstjernen a tour].
March 2003 - Cruise to Hamburg in support of the new MS Midnatsol's handover in Germany.
Since September 2005 - [The coastal route each winter half as substitute for MS Nordnorge / MS Nordkapp in Antarctica].
                2006 - Germany cruises.
October 2006 - New Hurtigruten "H" logo appears on the funnel after the merger of TFDS and OVDS.
22 February 2007 - Broke down outside of Florida and [because affected].
                May 2008 - Germany cruises.
Summer 2008 - Cruise to Svalbard. (The new MS Fram took over the Svalbard cruises from 2008 to 2011).
18 September 2008 - Back into the regular coastal route, Bergen-Kirkenes-Bergen.
22 March 2012 - Out of the regular route.
Summer 2012 - Last cruise in Svalbard. Will be sold by Hurtigruten ASA same Autumn.

                The name "Nordstjernen":

BDS was known for giving its ships the names of celestial bodies and Nordstjernen, the second ship with this name, is named after the star closest to due North. The star is also called the "North Star" in English, "Stella Polaris" in Latin, or just "Polaris". In the Middle Ages it was called both Stella Nautica and [Leiðarstjarna], meaning "star which leads the sailors into port." The North Star is very feint to the naked eye though it is the brightest star in its constellation, Ersa Minor (the Little Bear).

                  Hi Clipper,

I've read the Norwegian and the English side by side. They didn't entirely copy Carina's text - they mangled the top two paras slightly.

                  Your square brackets:

[diesel] - don't think this in Carina's text

[After completing one round trip ...] "Carina's says something like: On the 22nd March 2012 she will be taken out of service and sold, and is now sailing in her last six months as a Hurtigruten along the Norwegian Coast."

November 2002: Yes, as you have it pretty much - "Replacement for Nordlys for a round trip"

Since September 2005, again pretty much as you have it: "On Hurtigruten service for the winter six months as replacement for Nordnordge / Nordkapp during their trips to Antarctica"

22nd February 2007: "Suffered motor failure outside Florø and ran aground" (Not Florida!! But can one of the native Norwegian / Swedish speakers check that I've put the right version of grunnbrerørte in this context?)

and finally ..... Leiðarstjarna - yeah right - something star, but not the sort of thing we discuss in Norwegian at home!!

                  'Ersa' or 'Ursa'?

I didn't check the English!! Hopefully this helps a little - there may be some little Norwegian nuance I've missed, but I'm sure our friends will correct me if I have.

                  Cheers,

                  M.

You guys are doing a great job with this translate issue, so I would not go into that.
What bothers me is when someone (journalists in particular) start to translate what we in Norway call 'egennavn' (own name). One never translate that!

                    Example:
"Nordstjernen" (the ship) is Nordstjernen whether she's referred to in english, spanish, arabic, chinees or whatever.
Who would translate "Nordlys" (the hurtigrute) and in an english text say that "Northern Light" sailed here or there, who would call the newer vessel "Midnight Sun" when her name is "Midnatsol"?
This irritates me. The grand old lady "Nordstjernen" is called "Nordstjernen" not "North Star"!
(This was a little comment to anyone out there in the world using Google Translate blindfolded....).
"IF GOD COULD MAKE ANGELS...., WHY IN HELL MAKE MAN?"

                      Re: ::: Nordstjernen :::

Great effort, Clipper. I updated the text on the website in desember, and before that the out-of-service sentence wasnt there, and I made some smaller changes around, and it makes me wonder if they somehow have the old text? Like you point out Mark, everything isnt identical.

For the square brackets I second Mark in his corrections, expect the out-of-service sentence, that I would have put pretty similar as Clipper have translated it. "After completing one last round-trip as a Hurtigruten ship, she will be taken out of service on March 22nd 2012".

Ran aground (22nd February 2007) is correct. Isnt it funny how Florø translates to Florida?

Leiðarstjarna is correct. Some very old writing I think :P

And I also think it's supposed to be "Ursa" insteed of "Ersa"?

I had a big smile when I saw this article in the Norwegian paper Dagbladet today....

Do you want to be "cooler" than HM King Harald and his a little bit smaller yacht, then Nordstjernen might be the right ship for you... she is slightly longer than the Norwegian Royal Yacht and can achieve speeds 1 knot faster!

Thanks Mark and Carina, it's really great when people post comments so quickly.

I should have said that in my tidied up version, I have not kept strictly to a word-for-word or sentence-for-sentence translation. What works well in Norwegian didn't always work in English so I combined and rearranged things without (hopefully) changing the meaning. In one place I rewrote specifically to avoid "now" which tied the statement to a particular moment in time. I expect that at least some of the non-identicality (a.k.a. "mangling") is due to me exercising my translator's license.

I could not agree more with your point about proper nouns Big S. Google Translate would be better with an option, where you can protect words with Initial Capitals or ALL CAPITALS, like in some spell-checkers. I had fun changing "North Star" back to Nordstjernen all through then changing some back to "North Star" again in the section where the derivation of the name is explained!

I have changed my copy to reflect most of the changes offered but I think it's worth explaining/discussing a few further:
                            • diesel - I intentionally inserted 'diesel' as the engine type is not stated anywhere else, not even in the auctioneer's full version with lists of technical details. Flagged in case I'm wrong.
                            • 22 February 2007 - Doh! I thought "Florida" was odd but didn't check the original. " Florø" makes so much more sense.
                            • 'Ersa' versus 'Ursa' - Doh again! It's 'Ursa'. 'Ersa' was just pure Clipper. (I did French and German at my school, not Latin and Greek).
                            • Leiðarstjarna - I was just uncertain about the letter from the extended character set, which I didn't recognise.

That really only leaves "diesel" to be confirmed correct/incorrect. Anyone?
