    Re: ::: Nordstjernen :::

Take a look at vol.no and their tribute to the old lady (Vesteraalen Online).
After seeing those magnificent images, I belive I will bring my 100mm macro and take a walk on board if possible when she visit Kristiansund for the last time.
I'm so enthusiastic about those close-up/detail shots in the link:

...all those beautiful pictures make it hard to believe that her time in regular service is over... there is this special feeling around the old ships which can't be reproduced by the new ones. It is a step back in time, like entering a parallel - universe.

TECHNICAL DETAILS: MS Nordstjernen North Star is the oldest Hurtigruten is running and is a living piece of history about the Hurtigruten. She was built in Germany in 1956 and has reached the age of 55 years. North Star was built just after the old North Star from 1937 ran aground and sank in Raftsundet in late summer 1954. February 24th 1956, she delivered by Blohm & Voss in Hamburg to Bergen Steamship Company. Tonnage was 2191 gross tonnes and length of 80.7 m long. By appearance it was much like the other coastal vessels but stood out in the decor.

At that time ships were laid up with 1 - and 2nd class, which is not on today's Quick Router. 1.class was amidships and had 62 cabins. 2nd class was stern and had 130 cabins. Cafeteria was common to both classes. The machine consisted of a 6-cylinder Burmeister & Wain of 3000 hp as did 16.5 knots on trial trip. In Bergen's fleet was the North Star the only one who had class for international trade. Many cruise outside of regular coastal trade was organized, blah. the Shetland Islands and Svalbard, and in recent times to Germany and Denmark.

In January 1979 sold its share in Bergen and Hurtigruten's four ships to Troms County Steamship Company. North Star was painted with new chimney brand and the company's flagship. 4 years later, in the year 1982-83, the North Star upgraded and the old machine was replaced with an 8-cylinder MaK of 3600 hp. Most of the cabins were remodeled and furnished with a bathroom, while the number of berths was somewhat reduced. March 1983 she went into the route again and continued until the M / S Nordlys came as replacement in the spring of 1994. North Star was taken out of the route but the company kept the ship and has since hosted cruise to Svalbard every summer.

Since 1994, the North Star vikarert several times in the Coastal, but in your last years has been firmly on track. 22 March 2012 she is taken out of the box and sold, and now sail the last half of that of ships along the Norwegian coast. Milestones in the North star's career: Autumn 1954 - Contracted from Germany. The name "North Star": Bergen Steam Ship Company was known for giving its ships names for celestial bodies. Today's North Star is the second of that name. North Star is the name of the star closest to due north. The star is also called the North Star, Stella Polaris and only Polaris, but was in the Middle Ages called both Stella Nautica and Leiðarstjarna, and had the meaning "star, who leads the sailors in port." North Star is utterly in the constellation Little Bear is very faint as seen with the naked eye, even if it is the brightest of the stars of the constellation.

I don't mind them using it, at all, but atleast a request from them would have been nice before they copied and re-used.

ah, whatever.. So it's 110% settled, she wont claw her way back into the route again.. sadly.

I would send HRG an email and tell them about this copy issue right away. Atleast they could put up a link to your site.

Regarding the future of the nordstjernen, well, she's not sold yet...

Yes Carina, and it looks as if they used Google Translate.

Word-for-word identical, at least for the opening paragraphs.

You deserve at least a link as Polar suggests.

Don't think HRG has anything to do with this.
The mail should be sent to Norsk Megling og Auksjon AS, as it seems they are the responsible for the copying.

But, be prepared to see text- or picture theft in the future too, as there are many 'thieves' out there (talking out of experience after pictures being 'stolen' both by paper media and admins of other forums).

No, that's a girl who worked in the machine back in the days. Now, Hurtigrutens first female Chief acctually, if I'm not mistaken.

Norsk Megling og Auksjon's mis-translation of Carina's text is fantastic - my favourite bit is ...

"Many cruise outside of regular coastal trade was organized, blah."

Between us we've got 39 pages of really good photos on this thread - they should have just referred to Carina's website and this thread - and credited accordingly.

Auto-translations are often comical. I rather like "Since 1994, the North Star vikarert several times in the Coastal, ...".

On the whole Google Translate's Norwegian--English isn't too bad. You should try Japanese--English. The wheels come off. My Japanese friend once tried Japanese--English--Japanese and nearly died laughing.
