      I read in NRK, VG and Vesterålen online about this and read alot of comment from people under the articles. Many are against selling it, also riksantikvaren (Cultural Heritage). The sollution is that riksantikvaren have to give financial support if M/S Nordstjernen is to keep sailing for Hurtigruten.

          Re: ::: Nordstjernen :::

          Hello to all - this is my first post since discovering this superb forum!!! I have booked my first Hurtigruten trip for early February onboard the Nordstjernen (southbound), and I can't wait. I've looked back through the 32 pages of posts :-) but still have a couple of questions:

          1. Do all cabins have a power socket?
          2. How have other travellers found it walking around ports in ice/snow, is it possible to see things on foot as I much prefer this to guided tours?
          3. Can I get off at all hours of the day in port (ie. a 2am stop for example)?

          Any other advice for a first-timer who loves older ships and travelling independently would be much appreciated.

          Thanks in advance :-)

            Welcome to Captainsvoyage GraemeD!
            I am not 100% sure, but I think all cabins have a power socket. And I do believe you can get off the ship at night to. But I think the stops are shorter at nighttime.
            From which port does your voyage start?

              Re: ::: Nordstjernen :::

              Hello, GraemeD, welcome to our forum. Good decision to take an old ship! You will enjoy the flair of Nordstjernen.

              I will answer your questions as good as i can.

              1. As far as i know, yes. Hurtigruten is announcing that in their broshures. 220V European voltage (Don't know, where you come from...)
              2. You should have winter boots and warm clothes, then you will enjoy it. Most of the towns are not that big, so it is easy to walk alone and find your way.
              3. That depends. If the ship is behind schedule, passengers are asked to stay on board in small ports with short stops. Your should ask the tour guide or the crew, they will inform you from port to port.

              Another advice? Don't expect comfort. You are travelling on a 60 year old post ship, which was designed to carry freight and passengers, not to entertain them. She will move a lot in the waves. If you want just that, you will love it!!!

                  "Nordstjernen" and "Trollfjord" meeting in the Trollfjord
                  This was taken when I was a trainee onboard "Nordstjernen" in 2008, and we were on a cruise going from Germany to Norway.

                      Nice picture.
                      It makes me wonder if there's a unofficial record for most number of Hurtigruten ships in Trollfjord at the same time. Or in a other port?

                        Hmm, very interesting question! I think iv'e seen pictures of three ships in Bergen. Nordnorge and Nordkapp on the way to or from antarctica, and a third one in route. I might remember wrong...

                          Here is two together in Antarctica:

                          That MUST be a record, at least for that continent.

                            Well remembered, Ombugge.

                            I know I experienced three in Harstad once when Lofoten, I think it was, was moored there, not in being service at that time of year, and could be seen with the northbound and southbound ships (one of which I was travelling on). Can’t immediately locate a photo.

                              I think the record of most ships in the same place might have been in Trondheim in the winter ski championship in 1997: as far as I remember Nordstjernen was docked by Royal Garden, Nordkapp and Nordnorge further down the river, and then possibly one at Brattøra as well?

                              That would be those in addition to the remaining ships in the route off course.

                                Nordstjernen was this afternoon the scene in a firedrill carried out by the Firebrigade of Ålesund. The firefighters was transported out to Nordstjernen by Emmy Dyvi(Redningsskøyta)laying outside Dryna. The A-deck was filled with smoke and the smokedivers was training in putting out the fire and searching for two "missing" persons.
