Look at that first image of post #554..., look how she maneouver herself around her anchor chain. I, as a landcrab, get impressed looking at seamanship of the old school such as this. Don't know about you others...

    Great images, Speedbird! Thanks!!

      Great images, Speedbird! Thanks!!
To bring a ship gently against the wharf using anchor and bow spring is a dying art I would say. Not much used today with Bow / Stern Thruster and/or Tugs to assist in turning a vessel, and to get off the wharf on departure.

Nordstjernen departing Bodø today. The old lady sure is getting worn out now....
The decks have definitely seen better days and her hull is in dire need of a good sand blasting and probably some plate changes too.
Her anchor windlass keep breaking down and she has almost constant delays because of technical problems. Ah, and her whistle sounds like a drunk elephant!
Old lady, you deserve some rest and care now....

Well, enough complaining. Here`s the shots:

Speedbird: I've said it many times before, but I shall say it again: you are a brilliant photographer, and you continue to amaze me (and many others) with beautiful shots from your city!

The quality of these images is .... yes, the quality is really good. The exposure, the sharpness, the composition, the motif: it's all perfection.

Each time I see that you have posted new shots, I get excited, and I feel so honored that you have taken the time to share them with this great family!

Keep up the very good work!

Sad news indeed! How long has it been since she completed a round voyage without any delays or cancellations due to technical problems?

I agree with Speedbird very, very much.

With all nostalgy put aside, she is indeed tired after a long lifetime in a hard coastal service. She does indeed fullfill all safety regulations with no doubt, but with all these different brake downs, what if something happens at the wrong time, and at the wrong place?

She really needs to be replaced by a new and modern ship. I'm kind of surprised that no information on a new building is in place, have been discussed or that it haven't even been put out in the open more.

My personal dream, and that is just my personal dream, is that they will build an 85-meter+ ship based on the design of the old generation, but with all modern safety enchancements and equipments, and to a very high modern standard.

NO NO NO - she only needs proper care ! ! !

These ships were built for REGULAR and PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE.

Jeez, Speedbird, those pics are really great...

First word that pops up in my head is: sandblast.

Why is the hull skin changed only under the portholes? Did someone find weak points at maintenance?

                              Cool pictures, 'Speedbird'!!

I`m worried sandblasting won`t be enough. The maintenance neglect seems to be over the top now...

I can only assume they have replaced the plating due to corrosion from condensation or maybe even leaks from the portholes.

                                Best regards
