Interesting in the photo-sequence above to see the use of the starboard anchor when docking. In these days of bow (and stern) side thrusters, one forgets the techniques that the traditional ships used to manoeuvre. Presumably when departing, she hauls in the anchor chain to pull the bow away from the quayside?

That would be an idea! Good question! I am not really sure but as I remember, the anchor was immediatly lifted again after turning. But i may be wrong.... HaraldJarl???

That is correct. With the wind pressing her hard alongside at departure, the anchor being pulled in helps her depart more easily since she has no bow thruster(s) and just one single screw to help her work her way into the wind.

Off topic again, of course, but this is all so new and fascinating to me. Is there any website y'all can direct me to where I can learn all about thrusters and hydrodynamics and propellers and ship design and ballast and all sorts of stuff like that???? Or anyone interested in a teaching position in a warm winter climate????

Hmm, trying to remember: First they cast off the stern moorings, then start reversing out from dock, then pull farther away from the dock by the anchor, and then hoist it when at about the same spot it was dropped. If they need to depart the opposite direction, they reverse around the anchor (the "oldships bow-propeller"). Seems to me they mostly use the anchor when it's windy or a current (like Tromsø).
Sometime in good lighting conditions I'll have a presentable video of the procedure…

Spotted the old lady on the Honningsvåg webcam today, northbound.

Ohhh- the bottom right two just make me cringe. Looks like an office recycle sale. But the one above it..with the teak deck chairs- with the curved backs and adjustable leg rests...--I've been DYING for some of those but they are so expensive in catalogs. I just love the lines of those chairs. Why would ANYONE use anything plastic or metal with something so useful AND beautiful???

You know, that's because it was the 80's...., must they never come back!!!!!

Everything went crazy in those years, and it was also in the 80's all the nice and classic beautiful airline liveries disappeared.
They were replaced by some crazy painting one MUST have used drugs to design...

Who the **** decided that those chairs fitted in on "Nordstjernen" like hand in glove...? Was he/she blind...?

That said and out of my brain, I must say it's very interesting to see such memorabilia...., really like it....

Under the thread of ex-Polarlys I have posted som images of furnituring in the -80`s. And that theme seemed to be be continued by more of you even here in the Nordstjernen thread.

Those crazy 80`s.............. I wonder......was Hurtigruten sposored by Ikea or something like that

Here comes another image from the "lovely" 80`s. Front lounge in Nordstjernen. I think I took this photo in 1989 or -88.
