Agree with you on THAT, Sterkoder.

And I also have to admit, that it is nice to see "Ragnvald Jarl" in good shape. She is as old as Nordstjernen. And seemed to be taken very well care of by the 2 education-institutes. First as "Gann". Schoolship in the winter, and cruiseship in the summer. And now as "Sjøkurs". Also schoolship used as a sort of cruiseship during the summer.

Dear Eilun. I .... eh----- envy your cruise.............

I just have to pop in say how greatly I’ve appreciated the recent discussions and comments here on this thread. It so much helps to gain a better understanding of the complex issues of what is for many of us rather an emotional attachment to these fine old ships. Especially I want to add my own thanks to talfh for the insights into working aboard them.

I never actually experienced really rough weather on either ship myself. (Kept that extreme roll experience for Vesterålen, pre-stabilisers, southbound across Vestfjord!). So strangely it was not on the winter trips, but this summer in the extreme hot weather that I have become aware of the conditions aboard and the technical difficulties involved in keeping going on the regular route.

NX and LO are very nice ships with very friendli crew.. So small ships brings the crew much closer to each other to, so we all have a good time when we are at work. But as i alway told, the facility as cabins, shower, toilets etc are not good and we also earn less money than the on the newer boats. I love to be on NX in June,July,August but in the rest of the year i dont! My time on NX is soon over i think, much because of the facility and because of the ship is so old.

I hope NX and LO will be in service, but i dont think it`s right to use them both in the winter much because of people wont travell with them. Only you who loves the old ones

It`s enough with one of them in the winter and my personal favourite is NX, and i have worked on them both. I think NX is in much bether shape than LO!

Todays ship is to big in the winter, the newest ships should have been in the size like FRAM.. Or maybee they should have keeped Narvik and Lyngen and renewed them..

        Well.. none of us knows
I think we all will know more before newyear

If MS Nordstjernen will be the last old steamer in service, I am not sure, if I will ever travel again on her. In the past I had to many problems with the sticky hot air in the cabins. I hope I will find a way to sail on Lofoten or Sjøkurs. But I like to take photos of her.

The 14. July I got up at 5 a.m. - In the case of we would reach Maløy earlier, I hoped to see Nordstjernen arriving. Too early, she came across us at 6:30.

This is a very interesting discussion here and Talfh, thank you a lot for bringing in these new and very competent aspects.

As commercial salesman i am used to regard the things from the economical side. And therefore i see that the new ships are producing big losses in winter and the old one are much better able to fulfil the needs in space and costs. But you are right, if a ship is in his 50ies, it has a very critical age and your advice, better to preserve now than to continue in a breakdown, would better safe our beloved old ships.

The financial situation of Hurtigruten will not allow to build new ships and so the dilemma will continue. As i stated in many other threads before, the company seriously would need two fleets: the existing including Nordnorge for the summer and a second with smaller ships for the winter. But the task transporting both, passengers and freight is quite unique and there are not many used fitting ships available.

So i don't know how to solve this problem, maybe we could discuss this in an own thread called "The future of Hurtigruten". If you're interested, please give me a feedback. Or our captain could open a thread, if he thinks already now, that would be an interesting discussion.

Did you join in Bodo today? I saw her come in to port today as we cleared the cargo terminal after unloading cargo from the out-lying islands.

NX has canceld all ports from Trondheim to Bergen.
8 hours and 30 minutes late from Trondheim because coolingwater problems, puh... I have a lot to do on this old lady.

So that's why she never showed up when I was at the Atlantic road waiting to get a picture...
Well, I was in the area for another reason, but since I was there...

Nothing in the 'Ruter og Avvik'-section at Hurtigruten webpages, but anyway..., good luck with keeping her up and running and with catching up on the sailing plan!

Oh dear, still getting cooling water problems . . . it was happening on my last trip and resulted in constantly struggling with trying to keep some sort of resemblance to the sailing plan. I thought things might have got better with the somewhat cooler weather than I had being easier on the engine.
What actually happens with the cooling water to cause these problems? I heard mention of some sort of blockages.
