There are also positive signals: In this article, a senior adviser of Riksantikvaren (the Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage) is quoted with "Alt er reparabelt" (everything can be repaired) and says that, although it's difficult to anticipate things, it would be "natural" for Riksantikvaren to "follow up" on a listed ship, "også økonomisk" (also financially)... also, I found the picture of Nordstjernen on her way to the Ølensvag shipyard at http://www.h-avis.no/nyheter/trolig-...vikt-1.8156833 quite heartening - at least she's floating, and from afar you could even imagine that nothing's wrong with her...

She appears to be under own power, but with tug escort.

This looks quite good: http://www.riksantikvaren.no/?module...Show;ID=135201 (link via tangojoe in the German-language Hurtigforum)

So, Riksantikvaren says that there is large, but local damage. They expect repairs to be completed in January. Furthermore, they note that the ship, after the thorough restoration in Gdansk, is in an impressively good condition technically and visually, which DNV as well as the insurance company have confirmed (I personally can vouch for the very good visual impression as experienced at Fjordsteam, but it's good to hear that also the technical condition is very good - besides the current damage, of course). The Riksantikvaren article contains further interesting technical details, such as mentioning that riveting as well as welding were used in construction, and that damage is limited to the welded parts, which seems to be a good thing. They use the original plans of Nordstjernen to make replacement parts.

Thank you so much to keep us updated! For me it is quite astonishing, that today with GPS and detailed sea maps, such a grounding can happen. I am not involved into this business, so maybe someone can tell us, which quality the crews of such ships have (i remember aslo the grounding of Serenissima on her first GB trip...)

And we also had the grounding, or rather touching the ground, by the old Ragnvald Jarl (now SJØKURS) as she sailed as Sommerbåten with NRK (Norwegian Broadcastin Corp.) this summer.
I guess the GPS and other satelite navaid don't tell wether there's high- or low tide.
Then again, all nautical maps and navaids spell out depth as mean sea level...., don't they...?

Navigation charts give depths above Chart Datum (CD) or to Low Astronomic Tide (LAT) Mean sea level is used on maps and in engineering.

At the place where Nordstjernen grounded... is the tide there such high that a passage at high water would have been without risk? Looking at the pictures i have severe doubts.

Nordstjernen has been repaired after her near fatal grounding earlier:

Etter grunnstøtingen ved Haugesund i november har «Nordstjernen» stått i dokk hos Westcon i Ølensvåg. 28. januar ble skipet sjøsatt igjen og vil forlate verftet

                      MYSTERY: WHO OWNS NORDSTJERNEN:

We already know (at least I thought I did) that Nordhordland Dampskipslag acquired the Nordstjernen and got it brushed up in Poland before the fatal grounding near Haugesund just before Christmas.

But in a recent prospect for a Pentecostal cruise June 6 to 9 from Bergen to Flåm, I read this: "I was contacted ba Norwegian who was buying an old hurtigrute, He wanted help with the financing of the ship and the result is that half the ship is owned by people from Hole and Ringerike (near Hønefoss - which again is near Oslo)

Se the question is: Who owns Nordstjernen?
                      Regards; Sigve.

That's a very valid and good question Sigve. Personally, I have no idea - but as you, I have also sometimes thought about the relation of ownership for the vessel.

There must be some kind of registry somewhere, which is publicly open?

Who will buy up half of a boat that is protected by the Cultural Heritage?

Finally, there's activity at the www.vestlandclassic.com website. They're now offering Nordstjernen voyages in July there (trips from Bergen to Oslo, from Oslo to Bergen, and from Trondheim to Tromsø); after the voyage from Trondheim to Tromsø (28 July - 1 August), Nordstjernen will serve as a hotel ship during the Chess Olympiad in Tromsø. Sadly, I already have other plans for these dates, but thought it's probably interesting
