Insightful comments H-J, and I think we are in agreement in a way – HurtigruteMartin had used the word “beautiful” and I had simply answered accordingly. But one has to find other words to describe just how good NX looks in the new livery. Altogether tougher looking – not beautiful, elegant (or, as ehp might say, pretty). Descriptions more like yours, H-J, enthusing about the funnel

. . .but not with white lifeboats for both the aesthetic reason I mentioned (unbalances the hefty look of the funnel) and the practical see-them-in-an-emergency one.

When I said “I find the new funnel livery OK generally speaking” I was actually thinking about how there seemed to be difficulties implementing it on the 90’s ships – deciding on just how far down to have black paint.

I wonder if the orange colored lifeboats are actually because of new safety requirements. There ain't many white lifeboats left in the world, at least not on passenger ships.

I think SOLAS calls for brightly colored survival crafts now.

Could be. But Nordstjernen has had her orange ones as long as I can remember (20yrs+).

This picture is "stolen" from faktomfartyg.se
Nordstjernen was taken over by TFDS in 1979. Here we see NX with the TFDS funnel, and still white lifeboats.
Maybe she got her new orange lifeboats under her upgrade in 1983.

Looks like NX has all her Life Rafts back in place now and is thus up to full Pax capacity again. Probably been so for a while, but this is the first pics where that could be clearly seen.

Fantastic image of the old lady! Looks like she has some deck cargo?

Certainly does... I didn't even notice that. Looks like nothing down in the hold, keeping it all on top of the hatch....

Another point as well: they have got to do something with their whistle!! It sounds awful! My car makes a better sound than what she does these days! I for one, really miss hearing her very deep and loud trembling bass-sound!

Nope, NOT NEW lifeboats, but originals painted orange. They are still in place as of 19 June 2009!

Here’s the inside of the lifeboat. Note the tiny plate forward, left of bow:

Closeup of the plate, which reads ”Norsk Flyindustri, Fornebu, 1955”:

So her lifeboats were made at the former Oslo airport Fornebu, before she was delivered.
I think that very place also produced Norwegian-designed floats for seaplanes in the 50’ies.

                      Well.
                      Thanks for nice information HJ.

I have looket at a bunch of images of NX lately. And figured out that the lifeboats must have been orange painted back in 1985. Am I correct??????

And if the colour is THAT important for the safety........do you have any idea why NX got the orange paint, and NOT old Polarlys and others that time..?????

I don't know any more of her (their) history than can be found in here.

It's just that when I did a short trip recently there was a lifeboat drill.
So I remembered this question and asked the crew who pointed out the placard.
