    Re: ::: Finnmarken :::

There is also the 'A la carte' at "Babettes cafe" on deck 7. The food is there is slightly more upscale than the dishes you get from the regular cafe, more like the restaurant, except you just choose from the menu.

I remember we had most of our dinners there on our trip on Finnmarken back in 2006.

      Re: ::: Finnmarken :::

Thanks Graeme and PoloUK for your impressions and reminiscences. And as a result Eirik has popped in here and so AT LAST someone has explained the function of Babettes café! It was a total mystery to me – my “ghost café” – in September 2008!!!!

Interesting that you mention both Finnmarken and Polarlys Graeme, as I always think of the exterior look of these ships as having a kind of family relationship, especially stern-wise, whilst Finnmarken resembles Fram at the bow. But whereas it is wonderful to be able to stand out on the covered foredeck on Fram on the polar voyages, I did rather miss watching the foredeck docking activity at the ports on Finnmarken in regular route.

I find it difficult to put into words, but interior wise I still feel that Finnmarken’s art nouveau and art deco features don’t feel completely assimilated in the way such retro-design elements do on other ships. Trollfjord manages this in a context of more unashamedly modern design, and moreover is able to successfully bring off the ultimate retro triumph of the transplanting of the Espolin artwork from Harald Jarl into a lounge which looks and feels like it belongs, and is arguably my most favourite space on any hurtigrute.

I have read the latest posts here with great interest and enthusiasm.

Peoples own experiences with each and every ship, is always interesting.

Since I have had nearly 200 short and longer trips, as a distance-passenger, with all the 20 latest Hurtigrute-ships, people all over Norway calls me occationly to ask what ship they should choose for their voyages.

It is quite hard......yes almost impossible, to give an objective answer.

You know.......some like the mother and some like the daughter.......

Each and every ship has their own athmosphere, their own mood, their own style and indeed their own rules. (Written or unwritten)......

I follow YOU, Seagull, in every word....... My two favourites are TROLLFJORD and NORDLYS.

This is not only based on visual impressions. But much more based on the athmosphere and experiences I have had on my trips.

I have to admit, that I love the feeling of be a passenger on one of the old ships. So intimate, and so close to the elemnts, and the feeling of beeing aboard a REAL authentic Hurtigrute.
The mid-generation-ships has their own style and athmosphere. And my very first Hurtigrute-experience was a Bergen-Bodø voyage with the 1982-Midnatsol.
( I think all men will always have a special memory-ralation to their first woman )

It took me a long time to get used to the new and modern "cruise-hurtigrute".

Based on that it is hard to believe that Trollfjord and Nordlys is my favourites. But these are the two ships that the crew make me feels relaxed and at home.
The ship TROLLFJORD itself created something new. New and modern lines. It took me some time to get used to those new and modern lines. But I love the quite minimalistic style, and the great feeling of air-space and light. To me, Trollfjord seems to be the most conducted and complete ship. Where all carpets, art, elevators, stairs, furniture and everething, seems to fit in so perfect to ech other.

And above all that, it seems that the working-environment, climate and athmosphere among the emplyees, is special on TROLLFJORD. (And in the twin-sister Midnatsol, it is well known by insiders, that the situation is quite oposite. )

That gives me a great feeling of be FREE and relaxed emediately I got onboard. Nordlys is quite the same as Trollfjord.

2 years ago, my parents went for a roundtrip with Midnatsol. They liked it a lot. I joined them for a few days. And I took my mother for a visit on board the sister Trollfjord, when we met her in the Trondheim-harbour.

In about 5 minutes time, my mother said : WOW. This ship must be quite new. The smell is much fresher, and it lookes much cleaner than Midnatsol. And every employees are SMILING here............ Next time we will have a travel with Trollfjord.........

How we are met in the reception. And how the other crew meet us and treats us, is quite important, when I am givinging my subjective impression on every ship.

That marvellous feeling of beeing welcome, I also find aboard Nordlys. And letely also on Richard With.

But this is the FINNMARKEN thread.. So what about her????

I like Finnmarken as a ship, better than i like to TRAVEL with her. (???) The ship lookes like a ship. She gives me a nostagic feeling of the authentic Hurtigruten. She lookes like a Lady. And she has a ***y stern. I like the entrance to the foredeck. I like the swimmingpool, and the unique Babetes Cafe. When I got tired of the dry frozen pizza at the regular and usual cafe on deck 4, I went upstairs to the Babettes Cafe for gourmet-cakes. I have never tasted and seen likely on other hurtigrute ships. But I was almost by my own up there. Everyone else seems to be everywere else.
There are so many details with Finnmarken, that I really love. And I have to admit that Finnmarken has the fleets most beautiful and comfortable furniture, sofas and chairs.

But it is difficult to explain, that I miss the undefined extra, that I only find on Trollfjord. And i THINK that is related to my own undefined "feeling and mood".

(This post does probably not make any sence to other than me. But I post it anyway )

Martin, please remind me, in which ship did you meet your lundefugl? That was a good report.

            Hahahahahahaha
And I love you too, Clipper.

Every time I read about, or see a PUFFIN on TV or in real life, and every time I boarder my favourite ship, I am thinking of you.......... And my memories goes back to cabin 405 aboard.......eh.... TROLLFJORD

Thaaaaaanks, Clipper. You have a good memory.

But also in cabin 474 aboard MIDNATSOL there was PUFFINS

So feel free to choose what PUFFIN you like.

But as you see, I have put that Midnatsol-PUFFIN upside down.

              Martin,

So, both Trollfjord and Midnatsol have these wonderful birds. I think they should be mandatory on all Hurtigrutene.

Thank you for the pictures, I love to be reminded.

With the help of Google Translate :
              • Deutsch: Papageientaucher (the Diving Parrot)
              • Français: Macareux (all the males are called "Marcel" and all the females are "Sophie")

If you don't know Sophie Marceau, then look her up. I defy any man not to fall in love instantly.

Big applause for your report Martin. As usual you pick up the significant details and so we feel as we are onboard.
I never think about Finnemarken before but you gave me an idea.
In another hand I agree with you about Trollfjord:she is new but she has a soul. What you notice about crew and staff is right:smiling, open, friendly.
                And the desserts buffet....!!!!!

Thank you for this wonderful report, Martin. And again a speech for Trollfjord. Haven't been on her yet, for me it is hard to believe that there shall be such a big difference to Mitnatsol. The complete architecture does not please me, i don't think, another color scheme and a more friendly staff could compensate that for me.
Maybe a comfortable place to watch "Nordlandsbanen Minutt for Minutt". And maybe a nice looking receptionist, which is always quite important for our Martin...

In my opinion the colour scheme and the Art Deco design on Finnmarken is very distinguished, similar to Nordnorge, while the other often appear to me as "too much".
The pool, fitness and sauna area looks marvellous and unique. The internet cafe on deck 8 is fine. Deck 5 has the accessable bow area. You can step outside on four decks (Trollfjord: only 2!).

We must have the most multi-national and enthusiastic Hurtigruten Fan club right here on CVF.

If you add up the amount of money spent by CVF members and anonymous guests influenced by CVF they could almost get along without subsidies.
(Hurtigruten PR staff, are you listening????)

We all should get together for big discussion, what a blast we should have!!!

I think I have told more than once that I believe a ultimate size for a Hurtigrute is between Richard With and Fram. Even if I think TF is way too big, it's still a fantastic product. We should think about it like a very small cruise liner, instead of a very large Hurtigrute. And I agree with Cecilia, there is some kind of a small magic tiny difference between MS & TF. Due to some reasons it's however easy to forget that Finnmarken actually is approximately as big as MS & TF!

Talking about size, Carina has some fun pictures of HRG's in Geiranger together with QM2 now that's big!

Anybody up for a Finnmarken trip in March???

How warm is the water ?
